Smith, Ark., April 2 ep ard Busby was banged here at 10 o'clock today for the murder of deputy United States marshal Bar- ney Connelly, in the Indian Territo ry. He talked for half an hour on the seaffold, declaring the killing " have been in self-defenss. A half dozen women interested in the cas witnessed the execution. This is the | first efecution here for twenty years | not performed by George Maledon, | who has hanged eighty-one victims | without help. Maledon refused on | personal grounds to perform the ex | ecution. He and Busby were old friends. The execution was fair, but | not done with the neatness and dis- | patch characterizing Maledon’s exe cutions. Busby bas never denied the act, but claims that he acted in self- defense, not knowing who the deputy was. Busby was convicted of mur der in the first degree, and his son | dies mar- William was convicted of manslaugh ter and sentenced to the house of | correction in Detroit. Fort Smith has been the scene of many notable exe | cutions. The first execution that | took place was that of John Childers convicted of murdering J. W.
