Washington, Dec. 10.—Senator Peffer of Kansas was the subject of an animated discussion in the dem- ocratic senatorial caucus here yess terday. He had writtena letter to the chairman of the caucus which, while not fully committing himself | to act with the democratic party, pleaded for considerate treatment, particularly in the matter of com- mittee assignments. The letter was read and did not appear to attract much notice until one of the new senators arose and went for Mr. Peffer in some caustic remarks. He was denounced roundly for some of his anti-democratic speeches. The result was that the communica- tion was virtually laid on the table, at least until there is time for Mr. Peffer to define his status more ex- plicitly. Want to Enugrate to Africa.
