Future Prospects Bright. We this week present a “Business Index” of Butler. It is not complete because some of our business men were not ready to assist our agent in the difficult and expensive work. However, it is a representative showing of the town. The Index contains the names of enterprising and leading citizens who have earn- ed, and are in the full enjoyment of profitable and successful business and have established a good and honorable reputation in the sphere of commerce, manufacturers, etc. The Index speaks for itself. Itrep- resents a class of the best business men of the west. They are worthy in every way. Hard times has neith- er dismayed them nor checked their industry that always reaches success in the long run. Butler has not proven herself to be one of the most enterprising cities for advertising her great worth, but of late there has cropped out a dis position to go ahead anewand throw persistent energy into the promising and profitable work before us. Bates county, one of the western tier of border counties, is the third county south of the Missouri river. Lumber for building purposes, fencing, fire- wood, etc., are important considera- tions. Unlike the treeless prairies of the newer west, Bates county is well supplied in this respect with her beautiful and diversified stretches of forests—most of the streams are lined with timber. The more valuable kinds’ embrace black walnut, hickory, elm, ash, oak, locust linden, sycamore, mulberry, hack- berry and pecan. These woods are abundant for all present and future farm and building supplies as well as for manufacturing industries. Besides the timber supply for build- ing purposes both sandstone and limestone exist in all sections of the county. The climate of this section is de- cidedly temperate and mild. The winters are decidedly mild, dry and open. The autumns are pleasant and the summers long but not so hot as in the northern states. The climate and water are favorable to good health, especially as there are no ponds, swamps or sluggish streams to produce malaria. The soil of Bates county is partic- ularly adapted to the growing of apples, pears, plums and grapes, while nowhere in the west do small fruits do better. Butler, with but small public debt, ample banking facilities, good schools, handsome business blocks, fine residences and 4000 vigorous working, ambitious people who sup- port 4 weeklies and one daily news- paper, 10 church edifices. Butler with all these things, and others equally as valuable, may well look forward calmly to welcome coming years in that reliance begotten only of faith and six days work a week. The future is sure to be better. This is today the best place for profitable returns upon investments that truthful statistics and honest facts can point out to the capitalist and home seeker.
