DECIDEDLY SENSATIONAL. Terrible End ot an Affair Between a Rich Girl and a Negro- Jacksonville, Ill., Jan. 7.—For a long time the affairs of Miss Fannie Keener, a young, beautiful and wealthy white girl, and Nathan Pos- ten her colored coachman, have been the gossip of town. Some time ago Posten went to Iowa and while he was there Miss Keener sent hem a large amount of valuable property. Miss Keener remained here, where she has been living with her brother. It was thought that there would be nothing more between Miss Keen er and Posten, but this morning the negre returned to Jacksonville and at once proceeded to the house of Miss Keener, where he was met by Tom Keener who ordered him away. Posten turned to go, but as he did so met Miss Keener and a young man named Bancroft. Without warning the negro drew a pistol and began shooting first at Bancroft who was twice wounded, and then at Miss Keener, who promptly returned the fire, both being wounded. Miss Keener was shot through the lungs and hip and is in a very critical condition. Pos ten was shot in the arm and head. “At this juncture Tom Keener and a colored boy named James Brown took a hand, clubbing Posten terri- bly, until disarmed by the crowd at- tracted to the spot. Posten is in jail but so terribly injured that it is thought he cannot recover. It is said that Miss Keener can scarcely live through the night. The Keener family is one of the most prominent in Jacksonville, the elder Keener having been engaged in the commission business at Nup les and Meredosia, Ill., and interest ed in a line of Illinois river steam ers running to St. Louis. New York, Jan. 7.—Mrs. Haunah Southworth, the slayer of Stephen Pettus, the Brooklyn sillionaire, died in the Tombs prison last night.
