OFFICIALLY APPLAUDED. A Kansas Judge Who Admires the | Prohiintory Liquor Law. Topeka, Kas., March 11.—The grand-jury was empanelled to-day | and instructed by Judge Guthr The Judge declared that the pro’ itory law was an unqualified suce j 1. ia: In the course of his remarks he said: We have learned that the saloon destroys human industry, breeds crime, beggars society, degrades public morals and is the enemy of the family, the school and the church. We have learned that when we ban- ish the re-workers were able to earn more imouey for their families, that all degrees of so ciety are better fed, clothed 1 housed, and that they pay their coal, butcher and grocery bills with greater promptitude; that we can maintain better schools and give our children better education; that the saloon our wag morals of society are improved, vice f and crime decreased, and it is a i thought now worth observiug that there are hundreds of boys in this state, 10 or 12 of who | have never seen a saloon. There i has been, it is true, an occasional at- i tempt by persons to evade the pro- hibitory law by clandestine or secret methods, but all such persons have been speedily arrested, tried and punished by fine and imprisonment and their unlawful goods destroyed. { The great diligence of the county attorney, sheriff and other officers charged with the duty of enforcing the laws of the state against public offenders and the honor and integri- ty of grand and petit jurors in the discharge of their duties, have so cerystalized public sentiment in the direction of law and order that this court has almost been relieved from the trial of cases arising under the prohibitory law, as well as the other criminal laws of the state. Va., March 12.—Twenty-five citizens of this neighborhood have been admit- ted to bail to answer any indictment which may be found against them by the grand jury for assuming the role of regulators, tearing down eight dwelling houses and warning the inmates to leave the county. For a number of years the neighbor- hood known as “Hickory Wythe,” about four miles from town, has been infested by a number of dis&o- lute females. Recently a protracted meeting was held in that neighbor- hood by Rev. A. B. Cunningham, at which a large number of the citizens (professed religion. Rev. Mr. Cun- |} ningham and some of the church F} ©members conceived the idea of rid- ding the community of all bad char- | acters, and accordingly an organiza- 4 tion consistmg of more than 100 men was formed for the work of purification. A few days ago the organization got together and made a formal raid upon the objectiona- ble characters and gave them 24 hours in which to leave. The time expiring without the premises hay- ing been vacated, the mob returned and destroyed eight houses, driving the inmates away. Some person who did not approve of this work swore out warrants for 36 men en- gaged in the affair and 17 arrests were made. Yesterday I2_ addition- al arrests followed and examinations of 25 of the defendants were held. ee eee English Spayn Liniment removes Hard, Sott. or Calloused Lumps Blemishes from horses, Blood Spa ; Curbs, Splints, Sweeney, Stifles, Sprai and Swollen Throat, Coughs, Save $50 by use of one bottle. : ed. “old by W. list, Butler, Mo. ‘ all nd te- Warrant. Shiel and the office Seekers. Washington, D. C., March 10— One of the Hoosier characters now in this city is R. R. Shiel, of Indian apolis,or “Rhody” as he is familiarly known all through that state. He is known as the original Harrison man, and has been shouting for Harrison for twenty years, and thinks his mission now is to see that the original Harrison men are taken care of but wants nothing for himself. One afternoon last week he was in vited to lunch with President Har- nson, and this favor aroused the jealousy of all the other Indianians in the city. They imagined that Sheil had been taken into president- | ial confidence and in preference to all others in the state, and they re. sented it. Yesterday when he was | being chaffed by a crowd of Hoosiers | iu no very good humor about the luncheon, Sheil replied: “Now, boys it’s all your own fault | you wern’t at the lunch. President Harrison authorized me to invite every Indiania Republican in Wash- | ington was not seeking an office. I made the grand rounds, examined every one of ’em, and I had to go to the lunch alone. I was the only In- diana republican here who was will- ing to say he did not want an office.” Rhody says some wild things at times, but he got off a very serious truth when he declared that he was the only Indiana man in Washington who did not want an office. The . . | hunger of the Hoosiers is appalling. | On a parallel with it is the “omniy-| erousness” of the Ohio men. An English Medical Authority affirms that the best regimen for preserving health may be summed up in the maxim, “keep the head cool, the feet warm, and the bowels active.” There isa world of wis dom in the observation. Obstinate constipation, or costiyeness, fis an exciting cause of other diseases; ant, with many persons of sedentary habits or occupations, this inaction of the bowels is a source of constant annoyance, producing piles, prolapse of the rectum; fistula, and various dyspeptic symptoms. All these are warded off, and health is maintained, by the use of Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Purgative Pellets. “army of Northern Virginia.” Texarkana, Ark., March 13.—Col. M. V. He was an ex-confederate, serving four years under Gen. Lee, and was_bet- ter known over a large section of Arkansas and Texas as the “Army of | Northern Virginia.” He was a strong | personal friend of Jefferson Davis, and never accepted citizenship after the war, and until his death continu- ed to wear the gray, transferring his original set of confederate brass but- tons from suit to suit upon each re- newal of his wardrobe.
