He was on his way to Homer township to visit his brother L. E. Mann. Mr. Mann is a very pleasant gentleman and deeply re- grets the unforiuvate predicament in which his brother has placed him- self. Mr. Mannis well connected and staads very high at his home in Kentucky. He is a cousin of Judge Mann, of the Bourbon county court and acousinto Hon. L. F. They came by wagons and horse-back, aud by noon the streets were literally packed with people and the hitch- rack and alleys were jammed with vehicles of every description. We regret that we were unable to accept the kind invitation to be pres- ent. Surgical Operation. W. H. Clinkinbeard, about fifty years of age and a carpenter by trade, and one of our best citizens died at his residence in West But ler about 1 o'clock of gangrene. The funeral took place in the alte:- noon of the same day and his re- mains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. Up until Tuesday of last week, with the exception of being ruptured, he was a stout, hearty man, and worked constantiy at his trade. As thecireumstane:s of his untimely death may be a war:ing and prove a benefit to those efflict- ed as he was for 14 or 15 years, we relate the cause of his death. Tuesday herniacame down and be- coming strangulated began to swell, and he was unable to replace it. Wednesday Dr. Christy was sum moued, and called in consu:tation Drs. Rice, O’Rear and Boyd on Thursday. A thorough examination of the pa- tient was then made and it was decided that as strangulation had existed for 48 hours it was absolute- ly necessary to perform a surgical operation. Mr. Clinkenbeard wife were accordingly notified of the decision and also of the danger attending such operation. As it was the only hope left, both willing- ly gave their consent. The opera- tion was performed by Dr. Boyd, assisted by Drs. Rice. Christy, and O’Rear. It was very successfully performed, and for five days the | patient did well.
