It was related that Sir Nicholas Bacon was about to pass jedgment upon a man who had been guilty of robbery, at that time pun- ishable by death; but the culprit pleaded for mercy on the ground that he was related to the judge. “How is that?” he was asked, “My lord,” was the reply, “‘your name is Bacon and mine is Hog, and hog and bacon have always been consid- ered akin.” ‘That is true,” answer- ed Sir Nicholas, “but ashog is not bacon until it has hung, until you are hanged you are no relation of mine.” Still more to the pomt is this of two opposing barristers. The lawyer for the defense was so severe upon the prosecutor that the latter rose and asked: “Does the learned counsel think me a fool?” The retort was prompt: “My friend wishes to know if I consider him a fool; and in reply to his question I can only say that I am not prepared to deny it.” Thereare many instanc- es of passage of arms between bench and bar, but this one may be new to most of our readers. At the close of a lengthened and bitter wrangle between a judge and a prominent counss!, the former said: “Well, sir, if you do not know how to conduct yourself as a gentle- man, I am sureI can't teach you.” To which the barrister mildly re- plied: “That is so, my lord.” Regulate the regulator by the use of Warner's Log Cabin Sarsaparilla. William Marshall, a son of 2 farmer residing near Climax, was iiding a mule, and it is supposed he careless- ly tied the halter rope around his wrist. The boy not returning home as soon as was expected a search was made for him. His mangled remains were found about two o'clock on the morning of the 5th the mule still dragging him around by the halter. Every stitch of cloth ing had been torn off the boy's bedy. his head was worn into an inditin- guishable mass and in many paces the flesh had been worn off so that the bones protruded. It is sail that the mule dragged the boy fort dis- tance of fully four miles.—kermit- age Index. Consumptton Curd.
