A Cuban ¥nveers Mis Clerk. Havana, Cuba, Oct. 4.—Cries of murder were heard coming from a groser’s store ~arly yesterday morn- ing. While @ policeman was endeav- oring to force the door, the proprie- tor opened the side door and asked what was the matter. The police en- tered. In one corner of the store was the body of Inocencia Duran, clerk of the store, had been stabbed more than twenty times and his head nearly severed from his body. It appears that the victim had some money on deposit with the proprie- tor, Jose Abelleira, who, aided by a mulatto, committed the murder. Both are now in jail. Crimes are getting so numerous here now that people are afraid to go upon the streets after dark. The press is calling on the government to take active measures to protect the pub- lic. Louis Mr. Harry Garfield, son of the late President Garfield, said recently te a New York Herald reporter: “T know of no better way to learn my father’s opinion on that supject than by reference to his speeches. I know of nothing he said which was opposed to the expressions he made use of in congress. As early as 1866 he formulated a theory upon the tariff which I never knew him to vary from. Perhaps the shortest way to reach that opinion is by reference to the congressional Record.” He then read from a scrap book an extract from a speech delivered by General Garfield in 1871 before the congressional committee having a tariff reduction bill in charge.
