AFTER THE BOODLE. North ¢ Want Washington, D. C., Aug. 14.—Day after day pilgrims arrive here from id North Caroli uce the republican ly Virginia and licans Money. Virginia whose mission is to ind managers to spend money freely in those states. Some of them after talking with the congressmen of their party, have kept on to New York, hoping to influence Senator Quay and others to tap thé barrel in aid of republicanism in the South. Of course, these radicals hold out the promise that Virginia and North Carolina can be carried for the re- publicans if the proper exertions are put forth. ‘Proper exertion” means putting money into the pockets of the few white herders of the black vote, and Quay knows that to be true, and he probably will not waste money or time on states that are certain to go democratic. However, opinions differ as to what will be done.: Representative McClammy, of North Carolina, said this morning that a delegation of republicans from the tar-heel state had gone on to New York to whisper sweet words of encouragement into the receptive ear of Chairman Quay. ‘“Therepub- licans,” added the congressman, “are going to put plenty of money into North Carolina this year, and I am glad of it. Im progressive, and plenty of money in the state will make good times, but North Carolina will roll up from 20,000 to 25,000 majority for Cleveland and Thurman in November all the same.” Four years ago the republicans made business good in West Virginia by spending several hundred thou- sand dollars, but they failed to carry the state. It is reported here that the West Virginia republicans are talking of running Steve Elkins for congress in one of the districts of the state. It is said that he claims his residence in that state. Pri cts. Zl ty \PYLe & Crumiy, Agent The Bible. Among the books excluded from American schools is the English Bi- ble, and it may be interesting for the Americans to read the opinion of Signor Zonzogne of Milan, who an- nounces that he is about to issue a popular edition of theBible in half- penny numbers. Signor Zomzogne has not undertaken this work in the interest of religion, nor simply out hostility to the church, but as a commercial speculation. In announe- ing his enterprise he says: ‘There is one book which gathers up the poetry and the science of humanity and that book is the Bible and with this book no other work in any lit- erature can be compared. It isa book that Newton read continually that Cromwell carried at his saddle and that Voltaire kept always on his study table. Itisa book that believers and unbelievers should alike study and ought to be in every house. The text will be that of Martini, translated from the Vul- gate, and care will be taken to insure accuracy” And this the book which in an incomparable translation, was brought to America by its early set- tlers, which was read and studied by the founders of the republie for wis- dom in regard to the conduct of affairs, public and private: which in- spired the patriotism of our fathers and enriched the elements of our statesmen and our orators and teach- ers and which is banished from our public schools. It can be given in a cup of coffee ortea Withovt the knowledge ot the person tak- ingit; is absolutely harmless and will ettect a permanent and speedy cure, whether the patient is a moderate drink- er or an alcoholic wreck. Thousands of drunkards have been made temperate men who have taken Golden Specific in their coffee without their knowledge, and to-day believe they quit drinking ot their own free will. It never fails. The S tem once impregnated with the Specific it becomes an utter impossibility tor the Hiquor appetite toexist. Fortull partic- ulars, address GOLDEN SPECIFIC Co., 18. Race st. Schofield, who now com mands the army of the United States is a true blue “Democrat,” says the Macon Telegrraph (Dem.). “When the military was put over the civil power in the south, after the war, Gen. Hancock and Gen. Schofield were the two division commanders who distinguished themselves most by their noble respects for the rights of the people. Hancock in New Or- leans and Schofield in Richmond, won the respect and friendship of the people of the entire South, be- cause they dared to do their duty.” Referring to Mr. Blaine’s state- ment that “there is no use making laws for the protection of capital, because capital will protect itself,” the New York World (Dem.) marks: “Fully 25 per cent of the present tariff—and in many cases twice that—is for the protection of capital. That is, it covers the differ- ence in wages between this country and Europe and 25 per cent. And yet the republican platform de- celares for free whisky ‘rather than surrender any part’ of the bounty- giving tariff” Yre- more. The Galveston News (Dem.) re- marks that the $24,000,000 in silver coined every year is new money brought into existence, which can be locked up without harm if not needed. ‘Hence” it says, “it would be as if the opponents of silver coin- age could not complain of a surplus which has simply held back the sil- ver coinage of a few recent On the other hand, the opponents of years. an unnecessary accumulation may thank the silver coinage for having neutralized that accumulation, which would have been more oppressive if the government had not been coin- ing silver.” The Chicago Herald (Dem.) thinks there was never a greater confidence game than that played by Harrison’s friends at Chicago. They counted on Porter's popularity to pull them through and put him forward to make the nominating speech, hoping from this compliment to use him af- terward as a cat’s-:paw. Harrison accordingly got the nomination. But Gov. Porter seems to be a man of too much self-respect thus to ‘al- low himself to be used. Willing as he appears to be to do all in his power to aid Harrison’s election, he was not willing to be a mere tool. The Herald thinks every day's de- velopments show that Harrison will prove adead weight for Hovey to carry in Indiana. The congressional inquiry into the subjects of trusts has shown that the whisky trust is made up of dis- tileries located exclusively in North- ern States. The Chicago platform intimates that the retention of the tax on whisky is in subservience to the trust, but the representatives of the organization do not bear out this view. On the contrary, they recommend the removal of the tax as likely to increase the consump- tion of spirits. “In this they are doubtless right,” says the §Philadel- phia Times (Dem.). “They, at least, ar in full harmony with the Chicago platform, which offers highly tax- ed clothing and free whisky as the present Republican idea of political economy.” The late Kaiser William will have a statute in Berlin to cost $60,000. A Druggist’s Testimony. The Swift Specific Co., Atlanta, Ga. Gentlemen—I used your Specific a few years ago with a very obstinate and malignant case of scrofula, and effected a radical and complete cure. It was the case of a little colored girl, the daughter of a good custom- er of mine. The wife had died, and also several other children with scrofula or consumption. This was the last living child, and she had the worst case of scrofula I ever saw. She had a great many lumps and holes in different places about her face and neck, so that she looked deformed. He had tried a grea! many remedies, and had lost all hope, when I insisted upon his try- ing Swift’s Specific. He consented at last, if I would credit him until he could make a crop, which I did. Before he had used a half dozen ; bottles he reported the child well. Ten months after, when I left the place, there had been no reappear- ance of the disease. Three years ij have passed now, and no return; I | believe it a permanent cure. I am j using S. S. S. on another chronic | ease of scrofula, and it is growing ‘ better every day. \ R. E.
