f Sara are poe ————————————————————__——— YOUNG TASCOTT LOCATED. A Weird Story About an Indian Tern- tory Nest of Outlaws. —A of It nervous tones June 25. ear Woodward, !I. T., strange story came to the your correspondent last night. came in crisp. quick, from aman very erect of stature with auburn hair, keen gray eyes and the forehead of a true logician. Frank Weber, alias Happy Jack, is his name. He had just arrived in town, and having an almost incredi- ble burden to unload on a credulous public, sought this interview. The followmg is substantially what he said without break or interruption: “Down near the north fork of the Canadian, near the Oklahoma coun- try, is where our gang stays. We've been there for these five years past. There are eighteen in all since I left and I am not going back. Diamond Dick left two years ago and swore he would never come back, but the next spring saw him among us ready for business. Texas Bill went away to Sod City in the Neutral Strip to start a saloon and he is the only one who has yet left and did not return. Poor fellow; he was killed by a mere boy not a month ago and I suspect he would have been with us again if he had lived rruch longer. But there is one down there who won't leave. in New York he intended to sail for Europe, but thinking himself safer down here changed his mind. It is a good thing he happened to be picked up by our crowd, for only a few days afterward a sheriff's posse passed along and would doubtless have taken him in. He is a crack pistol shot, | tricks has become an expert hor man and is well liked by his compan- He will retain abode till his crime is forgotten ¢ | then venture back to though not to his old home. I wrote down on my as note book a number of questions and inteded to subject him to a cross-examination this morning, but strolling down to j the cabin where he lodged, I met a had vone, whither ot, nor wh man who said he he kne. he would re- turn. SEE | as it sounc as it may see , he told nest and impressiv the He has made it his home and seems content. Johnny Tascott is a mem- ber of the gang, and all the detec- tives in the country could not find him and all the soldiers of the army can’t capture him, even when T tell you where he is. We know a big reward for him; but he is a good boy, and it has no effect onus.” During the conversation we were sitting in the open air and growing uncomfortably cool. T asked Mr. Weber to come into my He consented, and on taking a seat con- tinued: “One of the boys was out rustling on the trail along the fore part of March. It was cold, there is room. in snow was on the ground and the wind was fierce and cutting. He rode up to the base of a cliff for shelter, and there, on 2 single blank et, close to a smouldering fire, lay the girlish looking face and form of a young man sleeping. He wore a travel-stained gray suit, and by his side lay a pearl-handled revolver. It was Tascott, and at the first sound of a man’s voice he sprang to his feet nervously clutching the weapon. Our men knew at once that he was a hunted man, and asked him to come to camp and get something to eat. } ne very wo heard one believes in its literal truth known to the cattlemen, cowl marshals, sheriffs, and hard c¢ rt of the ters in this p: territory end that includes everybody excepta few stray newspaper correspondents, peopie to list with the last, and seems to re- whem soine are inclined knows lots of athletic | ceive, in a way, conside tble respect. cter among it forth the inform. otal pravity of heart with the courage of Inquiry these ation that he men broug combines 2 a lion, and while no one here ws him to be such his reputation is that of an outlaw. He is credited, how- ever, with absolute veracity. Whiat- ever motive could have prompted the abandonment of every principle of honor and christianity save truth would be hard to determine, and yet such is believed to be his character: A man of fair education, much gen polished chosen a eral formation, he rather might have m in life with doubt- munners, much hi less success. There is a gang of thieves peradoes with a haunt somewh the vicininy of the place ed. It is and he deserib- skilfully organized, His suspicions were soon quelled— partly, perhaps, by his extreme hun- ger—and he consented. Heis there now, as I said, a member of the gang and as secure from earthly authori- ties as if he were in the bottom of the sea. The man who would dare deliver him would be dismembered of every limb and his trunk left to perish in the sun if it took those men a lifetime to catch him. The camp—I will tell you where it is and the world may know it, but its safety remains unimpaired. Down where the Wichitas live, between the north and south forks of the Cana- dian, in a forest, as thick and impen- etrable as the everglades of Florida. Cottonwood, high above the rest, with cedar and willow and black jack and elm, growing close together, are so entwined and knitted with grape vines that even the wild range steer that strays from his herd never gets far from the outer bounds. In the center of this imperforate woods are three acres cleared as clear as the prairie. Beneath the surface lie 12 dugouts of two or more rooms each, all connected by subterranean pas- sage ways. At the northern edge ina clump of cottonwood, high above the surrounding grove, is a station for the watch, and there in the day- time, sunshine or storm, a vigilant eye looks out for intruders. This is the camp. It has many conveniences that would surprise an outsider, and | is absolutely inaccessible, except to the initiated. “I have heard Johnny tell his story. He killed Snell in self-defense, and stayed around Chicago till he was known to be the man. He first went to New York, from there to! Cincinnati, thence to St. Louis a supposed to operate more or less in all the states joining the territory. The impenetrable forest is there too, and there is an improbable tradition that access to its center may ve had by underground passage. The densest part covers scarcely twenty acres, but as far as any one in this vicinity knows it has never plored. Horse stealing isa very common crime throughout this whole section, and while the horse is oftentimes found and generally in the hands of an innocent purchaser the thief is very rarely known. It may seem out of the usual order of things for an acknowledged outlaw to publicly proclaim himself, to stop over night in seeming safety in a civilized com- munity, but there is in this settle- ment of more than fifty people no one to execute law and no law to be executed. It would have been pure outlawry on the part of an unauthor- ized individual to have molested Mr. Weber, and such an outlawry as would have met speedier retribution than ordinary courts of law are ac- customed to deal out. And so it happens in these parts that a man is a man without regard to race, color or the previous commission of crime. The story is given as it was received with such corroborative cireum- stances as could be hastily gathered. Its truth is not asserted nor is it \ — for, but the men who heard » best calculated to judge of its palbentoneg give it credence. Cc. A.
