The people generally believe that Oho man who commits a rape should be hung or shot. The only question about the matter is, has a rape been eommitted and is the prisoner the guilty party. In the Rockville case there is no question about the com mission of the crime, and if Vanden borg is the guilty party, then indeed ho has pai penalty with his 1 -and pro so. We do not | orthe idea of taking the law inte 8 own hands, but there cases | that seem to justify it—Lamar Dem ocrat Vhe Grand Jury's report on the Bates county jail, is clear and con cise, giving the condition of the building as it exists without any em belishments. Every citizen should read it carefully and then see what it costs for transporting and keeping our prisoners in oth counties. This is no sectional or local issue but a matter that concerns every portion ef the county alike. If not for the pride of keeping our own prisoners at home, we must take into consider ation the costs of their keeping and transporting, which will prove to be a very big interest on an amount sufficient to build a new jail. We believe that our people would vote a proposition properly framed which would insure the completion of the structure for the amount asked for. ——_—_—_—_—_—_— Herman Zeibold owned large brew- ery in Atchison, Kas.
