The-first act of Mugg’s Landing Thursday last, was played in Todd’s saloon, between Bob Plummer the bar tender, and three members of the troup, and asthe curtain went down the three theater men found themselves helping each other up off the sidewalk tront ot the saloon. Being men that loved peace rather than war they tookto ther heels and were not overhauled until they had reached Rich Hill. Marshall, Tex., March 11.—Duke Hogan, the express agent who is charged with robbing his office of money and packages, was tracked trom Fort Bond county to his tormer home near Carthage, Panola courty, by detectives. Sheriff Forsythe ot Panola, with two deputies, went to arrest Hogan. They were met by two sisters ot Hogan, both stout, buxom girls, one of whom caught the sheriff and held him while the other with a pistol kept the two dep- uties at bay until their brother, could escape and get tar enough the start to get into Louisiana to aveid being captured. The detective found where Hogan had spent about $60 on the road from Fort Bond county. Judge Scott. of the St. Clair coun- ty court, appeared at Jefferson City Saturday for tral, and was fined $200 and sentenced to two months in jail constructively. Hold On. Don’t: make a mistake. Ot course they find a few men, even in this enterprising place, who want to reap the benefits of a road without any cost to them- selves. It takes all kinds ot people to make a country, and I suppose this class is necessary too. More- land Bros. are building a devot, which they will use for a blacksmith until the railroad people need it. Loran Whitmore 1s spending a few days with his friends here. Loran is feeding cattle for George Price, in Dade county, this winter. Mr. Price ot Eldorado, is visiting his sons ano daughters in this neigh- borhood. ; ‘ Rev. Mock of Montrose, filled Rev. Fly’s place at Walnut Grove Sunday. There are tour churches within tour miles ot Ballard and be- tween the four we have preaching every Sunday. Uncle Dave Gilbert, the cattle king of Spruce, has bought some more cattle. He now has 175 head. Uncle Dave knows how to make things count, and is perhaps, one of the most successful teeders in the county. George Price is at Eldorado at looking after his cattle there. Miss Sudia Bowden will teach the Fairview school this summer, and Miss Bell Moore at Freezeout. Joun HENRY. The Pioneer Boot and Shoe Store. The boot and shoe store on the west side, owned by R. Weil of Butler, but under the management of John A. Bradly, was closed on Wednesday, the remnants being shipped to Butler where it will be added to Mr. Weil’s present busi- ness. Mr. Bradley first began busi- ness in Clinton for Mr. Weil about sixteen or seventeen years ago, and has had charge of his trade here during that long period. It is very seldom in any business relations that one man is retained in any position for that length ot time, and the change is now made tor the main treason that Mr. Weil’s health has become very precarious and he de- sires to consohdate everytning at Butler, his old home. * Mr. Bradley will take a tew month’s needed vacation and rest trom business, as during his long period ot connection with Mr. Weil, he has not had a week of illnesa or for recuperation. It is a matter of history that Mr. Weil’s store-was the oldest exclu - sive boot: and shoe store in Clinton, and was established in 1868, first Sader the firm name ot F. P. Rey- muller & Co. Hall, passed quietly away and her spirit returned unto God who gave it. She was a consistent mem- ber of the Baptist church, and the loss of her christian influence will be deeply felt in our community. The fell monster consumption has done 1ts work and robbed the family of a loving wite and a kind and de- voted mother.
