How can they bot suspect that their hearers are deceiving theinsel- ves in professing to loye the Lord and the gospel, while they enjoy plenty and lay up for their children letting their pastors wear out their lives in distressing poverty. Their spirits are otten depressed and their hands weakened, when a regard to the digmty of their office torbids them to complain, and induces some to suffer in silence and submiseion. It 1s, therefore, sintul, not only to defraud, but to be niggardly to the ministers of God, and their mainten- ance must not be considered as an alms or imposition, but their just dues as the Lord’s portion out of men’s estates, which being withheld will pollute the enjoyment of all the rest. Happy the land whose faithful minister of Christ are to be met with in every district! The people will not be impoverished by maintaining them, nor will they, in general, much complain in this respect, so long as ministers dilligently apply themselves to dispel 1,norance and error, and to diffuse the light of divine truth, stop the progress of immorality and promote the practice of universal holiness, and by their doctrine, influence, examples and progress to render all within their sphere more wise, holy and happy. The office of a mmnister is a good work and an important charge, and to be employed and trusted in it, to be approved faithful and made use- ful, is the greatest honor and favor which God ever conterred upon mortal man—but mighty and_peri!— ous. And for their services in the ministry itis the Lord’s pleasure that they that preach the gospel should live of the gospel, and be preserved from anxieties and temp- tations and pinching poyerty.
