The Burglars Seek to Dispose of Their | Boodle in this City—The Goods Strangely Recognized--One of a of the Gang in Jail. - —_-oS Bloomington ({11.) Pantagraph, Oct. 25 Just one month ago last Saturday evening at 6:30 p. m. or thereabouts | the jewelry store of Mr. W. G. Beas: | ley, of Rich Hill, Mo., was entered was Seasiey by burglars while Mr. at supper, and the threves escaped oo to S1,- | of 26 with goods valued at $1,2 consisted 18 Jadies’ gold watches; three gentle: | 500. The boodle silver watches, No. size; eight men’s gold watches, 14 carat fine | and ,and Alberts, valued at from $5 $60 each. The lett town undetected, cases, two dozen neck chains to robbers the and to their identity was learned from that day until lost Thursday, On Friday a young stranger entered Hlawley’s art and jewelry store, no clew and proposed | to Mr. Hawley to sell hima quantity | Mr. no objections to seeing the stuff at | of jewelry cheap. The man | | went and was admitted to the store, | and, opening a small valise, displayed | a large quantity of watches, ete. | Strange to savy, Mr. Walter Lun | ter, Mr. Hawley’s jeweler and sales- | man, was for three years an employe of W. G. Beasley at Rich Hill, and came here only a tew months ago directly trom his ciuploy. Just five weeks ayo last Saturday—a week previous to tie burylary—Mr. une | ter had been at Rich Hill and mar | med a young lady of that city. It was quite natural, therefore, that he should have learned all about the We appoimtment burglary. was present at the between Mr. Hawley | and the stranger and at once recog | nized the goods belong to his} former employer. Mr. Hawley wade some plausible excuse tor an other appointment, and as soon as the stranger disappeared notified the police. An hour he again chanced to meet the stranger, and in the back room of a well known resort, was again shown the fewelry and urged to make a_bar- gain, this tme by both of the un- known. He put them off by saying that he could not at that hour obtain the money, and on leaving the place gave information to the police. The police kept a close watch and at 2 clock Marshal Bentley arrested an anknown man whom Sergeant Davidson had spied standing in the shadow ot the stairs at the Ashley fouse basement. This man was asdentified by Mr. Hawley as one ot the two who bid shown him the vewelry. He was taken to the city Prison and gave the name of Jimmie Carroll, and said that some ten years ago he was employed about the residence of Dr. J. L. White. Or: course he was reticent as to his con- or two later section with the burglary and the disposition ot the ‘boodle,’? wiich, fogether with Carroll's partner, is stil a missing quantity. Whether the accomplice escaped the town, taking the swag with him, or wheth- er he and it are both in town, still is # conundrum that may or may not be solved. Itis understood that a feward of $200 1s offered for the secovery of the stuff. Carroll, the arrested man, is said to be quite no- ted in police circles ot St. Louis as 2crook and burglar, Mr. Beasley, the proprietor of the Ruch Hill store, was expected here fast night.
