Respectiully, G. B. HickMAN. Judge James B. Gantt. | The canvass made by Judge Gantt | in this district 1s one any man could At no | time were personalities resorted to He treatec instance ud should feel proud of. by him in the canvass. Mr. Stone in every that respect due his position as con- gressman, and his able, honorable with and manful contest for the nomina- tion has endeared him to the people many good | citizens all over the district, who for reasons justifiable could not support and made friends of him at this time, but who stand ready at any time hereafter to give him their moral support, prayers, and, if need be, their yotes. Had Judge Gantt taken the advan- tage of his competitor, and done what many would haye done—what many ambitious politicians have done—he could have been the nomi- nee to-day of the democratic party in the 12th district. But in his un- assailed honesty as a private citizen, in his incorruptible decisions as a judge, bearing the honors an n by a united vote ot the democratic party six years ago, he could not and did | not enter into an active canvass for congress while Mr. Stone was en- gaged as the people's servant at the national capital, during which time, however, the posts had been set and the wires tightened that fenced him | out of at least two of the leading counties, Jasper and Cass; and a third, our own beloved Bates, was thought by the friends of Mr. Stone to be completely enclosed, every wire spiked and no bars lett down. But, notwithstanding all this, Judge Gantt carried three of the banner counties—Bates, Barton and Henry ujorities, and so de- hero of the ’Frisco cxilted position tendered h —by rousing 7 me the re stor of primaries and conventions in Jasper fand ciweepion amanipe were terrified at the thought of having the democratic differences in that county referred hack to the equitable settlement.
