SWIFT AND SURE VENGENCE. One Hundrec Lives Lost. Boston, Jan. 18.—-The city ot Columous lett Boston at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, carrying eighty passengers and a crew of forty-five. At 3:45 a. m. Friday, Gay head- light, bearing south, halt east, the yessle struck on the outside of Dev- i’s Bridge Buoy. The wind was blowing a gale west by north; the vessel immediately filled and keeled over, the water breaking and flood- ing the port side of the saloon. All passengers excepting a few woman and children came on deck. Near- ly ali were wearing life preservers. all the boats cleared away, but were immediately swamped. The ma- jority of the persons washed overboard. Seven passengers left the vessel on a life raft and about forty more took to rigging. At 10,- joa. m. the Gay Head life boat put off and took An- other life boat put off between 12 were seven persons. and1. The revenue cutter Dex- tercame along about 12:30 and sent off two boats. ‘Twenty-one persons one of whom was dead, were placed aboard the Dexter, and atter all the persons were taken from the vessel the Dexter pro- ceeded to New Bedford.
