Dec. from couriers: reacaed ‘Fombstone Bisbee with news of a bloody trage- dy in thatcamp a few hours previ- ous. Shortly after 7 o’clock a par- ty of men, well mounted and heavily armed, rode into town, and when within a 109 yards ot the store of A. A. Castenada dismounted, and leav- ing their horses in charge ot two of their number, five of them boldly walked up to the store. Three of the party, it 1s stated, entered the store and the others remained on the outside. Just what transpired in the store is not yet known, but a few minutes afterwards the sound ot rifle shots rang out trom the neidhbor hood, desultory at first, but rapidly resolved into a regular fusillade. ‘The inhabitants, wonderstruck at the sound, hastened to the scene and saw the party of men mentioned mount their horses and deliverately ride off down 1n the direction trom which they came. MURDEROUS WORK. But a minute elapsed, however, before it was known that the reports ot the rifles heard were not the echoes of bravado, but the death knell of two human beings and probably in a few hours ot two others. The names of the parties killed outright are J. C. Tappeiner, assayer at the Copper Queen mine, and D. T. Smith, a well known rancher of San Pedro, who had a business interest in Bisbee. in addition to these there is J. A. Nolty, better known as ‘“*Tex."’ who 1s engaged in the lumber business there. He was shot m the breast, receiving « wound from which he cannot recoyer. Mrs. Roberts, keeper of a boarding-house, receiyed a wound in the chin whick will undoubtedly cause death. Tap- peiner and Smith were both shot in the head and killed instantly, the former falling with his head in the Bon Ton saloon and Smith tell a short distance from him. Mrs. Roberts hearing the noise of the fir- ing came to the door ot her house and received her death wound while looking in the direction of the shots. Nolty met his fate in about the same manner. The voung men are now on the defensive side, and as many of them are flat broke, great sorrow prevails among them. All praise for the grit of the pullets. We can hear friend Mc- Clanahan, of the Oplic, laughing at the ‘‘crowing” side, in this their hour of troulble and inability to crow. —La Patta Home Press. County Indebtedness. Harrisonville Democrat. Judge Philips, presiding justice of the St. Clair county court, recently went to St. Louis to conter with the bondholders regarding a compromise of the bonds of that county. The bond holders present represented some $530,000, of which $350,000 are in judgments, but the court re- tused to make a levy for the pay- ment thereof and secreted themselves whenever the United States officials made their appearance. But the People soon saw they were only making bad things worse by such a action, and hence the visit of Judge Philips to St. Louis. What 1s true of St. Clair county 1s true of every county in the state having like in- debtness.
