An Interesting Batch of Items by an Eagle Eyed ,Correspondent of the Times, Ep. Times :—Walnut city the im- fant wonder of the South West is still on the boom. Parties prospect- ing for coal found a vein to-day with- in the city limits, the vein 1s four feet the finest six inches thick and ot quality we ever gazed upon, it is} found at a depth of from fiye to ten teet below the surface. Mr. Drisdale the proprietor of a large hotel which has just been erect- ed on eighth street, commenced drill- ing for water on his premises a few days ago, to-day at a depth of ninety six feet he struck rock, it being of the finest quality of oil-rock, the drill had not penetrated the stone buta few inches, when Mr. Drisdale wag standing some ten or fifteen teet trom the wel!, struck a match to light his cigar, the instant the match was lighted much to the surprise of Mr. D. the atmosphere for several feet around the well was in a_ blaze, the blaze soon being confined to the well, in a tew seconds later a tremen- dious roaring and shock was heard andtelt throughout the city. The shock was so great that it shook the dishes trom the tables ot some those that hved on adjoing lots. The fur- ther drilling ot the well has ceased forthe present in order to enable Mr. D to make preparations for con- fining and conveying the gass through pipes some distance trom his hotel. The well is not more than thirty feet from the building which endangers his premises of being burned should the gass he set fire in the present condition of both house and proper- ty. To stand near the well at pres- ent and listen at the blowing and tumbling going on at the bottom of the well, one would think that Jum- bo had been resurected and. turned loose to wander in Bates county, and had fallen into the oil tanks of Wal- nut township, and was blowing and bellowing tor help. The general supposition by nearly all here is that the gass well of Mr. D. will furnish gass enough to light up allthe cities and towns within sixty miles around. ltis generally understood here that the ironing of the new road will commence next week from Hume to this city. Mr. Ed., having been in this, the Soon to be queen city of the West, but a short time it is indeed amusing | to haer the relating of many reports, gotten up by some citizens ot the smaller towns around, as tothe pros- perity or downfali of Walnut, at the same time they have no more knowl- edge as to the future result of this city than a last vears bird’s nest. Nothing has turned up since we have been here, to marr the hapiness ot the good people ot Walnut, with the exception ot a littie burglarizing on Wednesday night last, a few resi- dent and business houses were en- tered by thieves, some of the inmates Were relieved of a little cash while others of valuable articles such as tlothing jewelry &c. ne of the thieves was captured the following day at Rich Hill giving his name as Newan he contessed partly to the Stealing.
