The Oklahoma Boomer Start for the Promised Land. MontTGcomMery, Jan. 31.—Great excitement exists here. The com- mittee appointed to examine the books and accounts of State Treas- ury Vincent were to begin the ex- amination yesterday. Vincent left the city Monday might. A letter from him to his ehief.clerk was delivered to the later yesterday afternoon, to be laid betore the "Governor. Vin- cent said he was behind, but was go- ing to New York to get the money, which the letter indicated he had loaned. An examination of the books of the cashier and others showed that Vincent speculated large- ly in the cotton tutures. The de- ficit, as far as can be gathered, is between $225,000 and $300,000. A LATER DISPATCH. Treasurer Vincent left Monday night, but by what route is not known. The Governor will offer a largs reward and has sent telegrams to the police ofall the large cities. Vincent is five teet 10 inches high; very neat in dress; brown hair and beard; beard fulh and tong, with mustache; has vety bad teeth and a scar on his forehead. The Governor sent to the Legis- lature to-day the folowing mess- age: To the Senate and House ot Rep- resentatives. It becomes my painful and mor- titying duty to inform you that Isaac H, Vincent, Treasurer of the State, is short in his accounts and has lett the city. This fact was made known by Vincent in the following note to ‘A. D. Crawford, clerk of his’ office, dated the 29th, which was received by Crawford on the afternoon of the 3oth, and was communicated to me at 2:30 p. m. that day: STATEOF ALABMA, ) TREAsSU&Y DEPARTMENT, i Montcomery, Jan. 29, 1883. Dear CrRAwForD :— I find this evening that my money isnot here, nor has it been paid to the Importers’ and Traders Bank as Promised. I leave for New York tostraighten the whole matter. 1 aave perhaps, waited too leng, and will be censured, but Ihave no idea of running away. I wish vou weuld assist the committee, and after a balance is ascertained ask them to telegraph me, I wish to state emphat- ically and positively that being be-} hind in my cash is my own fault, and that you have nothing to do with it. Your friend, J. 9. Vincent, The amount of Vincents defalca- tion can only be ascertained alter a careful examination of the Treas- urer,s books and a careful count ef the money ta the treasury; but a hur- tied and partial investigation indi- tates that it 1s more than $200,000. | It snot known by what train or what direction Vincent lett Montgomery. Means have been adepted te inter-/ cept and detain him if pessible. It is believed that the State is largely “insured against, ultrmate loss. Com- munications will be delivered to you from ume to time if any further in- formation comes into my hands. (Signed) E. A. O’NgEat. Governor. The committee counted the mon- ty in treasury vault and found $150- | 000. The deficit 1s $227,000, am- iply secured by good bondsmen.
