They give a view of matters in tne Flewery Kingdom which will aston- ish. many who will suppose. that old The letter is to an old classmate in this city: “For nearly twenty years my life has been devoted to literary and ed- ucational pursuits, and during that time I have written or translated more than one hundred volumes “6f works, chiefly historical and scien- tific, tor the use cf the Chinese Government in schools, etc. I have edited more than thirty volumes of Chinese periodicals and taught for the goyerment neafly three hundred class pup!'s, and just now I am en- gaged m founding 4 first-class An gin-Chinese university with a group ot some tour high schools to prepare pupils for the University prooer. Just now [have 400 pupils in the high schools, and there are nearly a thousand more waiting to enter just a8 s00n a» our accomodations will admit. I must have thirty thousand dollars by next spring to secure the grounds necessary or the location of the University. The others, the Ingh schools, are not so urgent.
