C., Oct. 19.—For months past there have been rumors _of a terrible apparition which has trightened all the women and chil- dren in Clear Creek township. The women say that tor two weeks they haye been subject terrifying visits, in the absence of th hus- bands, f1om a creature like a_ shiny negress, with long hair and She asks in hardly to to eat, and makes efforts to get hold ot the children. The men, getting tured of the fears of their wives, de- termined to try to catch the creature, and for the last week crowds of far- and mghtdy chasing her, without success. The first effort to catch her was made a/ week ago by Joha Roberts, a black- smith. Tne wild creature had ap- peared several times at a fire which it was the habit of Cortey Moore, colored, of the neighborhood, to hight atter dark in the yard of. his house for the preperation of his | meals. He was badly hurt in his efforts to keep up with her, and reported that | she outran a buck and cleared four | corn rows at a leap. That same} night she was again enticed from the gloom of the woods by the kindling of a fire and was chased by thirty men, without success. Capt. Marsh Allen later in the day met her in the neighborhood, with her face torn and bleeding and 2 long bloody knife in har hand. The creature was naked and so unearthly and terrible looking to him that he savs he is not sure it is a human being. Her hair reached almost to her feet, but was kinky like thatof the African. It is not mere fright that has caused the coun- try people to organize in their at- tempts to catch the creature which has been living in the forests and swamps for a year or more.
