Ex-senator Blaine’s new house 1s now having the finishing touches put toit. Mr. Blaine was in New York recently, and read in one ot the papers there a description of Gov. Tilden’s new mansion, One thing that stuck hin particularly was the way the din- ing-room was fitted out. He visited the house and was particularly nleas- ed with it. He immediatly made up his mind that the dining room of his own house should be fited out like it. He accordingly telegraphed his builder to meet him in New York. The two then visited Mr. Tilden’s house. The builder was asked to prepare an estate of what it would cost to make the Blaine tdining-rooin like it. The builder made the ne- cessary calculations, talked with Mr. Tilden’s contractor, and then sat down and began figurmg.. In two day’s he gave Mr. Blaine his answer. Well how much will it cost Mr. Blaine asked. “My fguring,’’ replied the builder, “put it at $52,000.” “I au supposed to he an unusually rich man,”’ rematked Mr. Blaine in reply, ‘*but I’ll tell you candidly 1 con’t stand such a dining-room as that. I hke it verv much, and, while Gov. Tilden can have such things, T’ll have to dismiss the thought. Why, my entire house finished won’t cost me more than $80,000—$52,000 for a dining-room1!”’ Mr. Blainé’s dining-room will be ‘fitted out according’ to the orginal plan. An Atrocious Deea. Springfield, Mo., Oct. 4.—The little town of Beis d’Arc, this county, was thrown into an intense state of ex- citement over a brutal crime perpe- trated near that place. An old man named Thos. M. Brown, who ispar- tially paralyzed, and who earns the means of existence by sawing wood was yesterday engaged at his usual occupation, when a scoundrel attack- ed him with a stick, beating him and stamping him until he was sensless. Héthen rob ed him of all the money “tetradabout him, $9,50.after which he dragged the old man’s body to a sink hole and there left him for dead. How long the old man lay in that condition he does not know, but on recovering he cried for help, which was responded to by some of the citizens who happened to be passing by, and to whom Brown stated that a young man named George Coffen- berry had committed the crime, whereupon oflicers immediately be- gana search tor that finding him and effecting his arrest. Inquiry soon developed the facts that Loffenberry had just paid a saloon debt of a $1,50, and perchased a pis- tol, which it seems, added to the money he had on his person exactly tallied with the $9,50 of which the old man had been robbed. The news of the affair quickly spread through tne community, and the excitement and indignation became so intense that abody of men was soon organ- izedand a rope gotten with the manifest intention ot meting outsum- mary punishment on the spot, but the officers firmly protested and wiser council prevailed, and Coffenberry was hastily placed on 4 passing tram and brought to the jail in this city. Brown’s recovery is considered doubttul, though he may eventually pull through. person soon John Sherman and Fred Duglass will address the annual soldiers’ re- union at Caldwell, O.
