The following letter from Dr Dawson, tormerly of Butler, now sojourning in Anzo handed us by Mr. Dave WwW We omt a s catic the f reference to friends and that part regarding the country and the author’s travels. The letter was to Messrs. Lansdown, directe| Walker and Riley, and is as fol- lows: Hackberry, Mohave Co., A. j Weil, I gave you in my last al Itwas rough sketch of my trip out. not tull nor well connected, bur pos- sibly afforded you some inicrest. I will now give you another sketch of atrip of about two weeks in the mountains, off of which I am just re- turning. An opportunity of gratify- ing a desire T had to visit angl ex- plore some Of the many rugged mountains with their vast do rich mine deposits and mines. of which this **Mohave’ county abounds. was presented about ten days since. There was an old gen tleman drove in one evening with a load of veget arrots. beet., onions. ctc ad for sale. He was invited to spend the night in camp, which invita'io greatfully accepted, and as he proyed to be an old Kentuckian, his treatiient was ot course hospitable, which, as characteristic of those people, he ap- preciated the treatment he received. During the interchange of ideas. etc. with the old fellow, I found his name to be Jonn Henry Johnson, v was born in Fleming county, Ky., but was from near Owensville. Bath county, Ky., to Mo. thence her He is an old bach., about my age, 45, anda complete match for uncle Ike Neat in nearly all respects. He has his pets, dcgs, cats, mules, guns, | etc., “but not Bill Lips Combe,”’ (wite) all ot which he is willing to swear hy. He alsohas_ the photos | of Grant, Garfield and Lincoln adorning his cabin walls, and like | uncle Ike, somehow betieves that he will know them again in the dark future, and be much benefitted there- | by. But I beg your pardon. 1) started to tell you of the wip, and more anon of fricnd J. 1 must bere state, for fear I will torget and the hy do him great injustice, thatamong | all ot his peculi es there under- ; lies many good sterling elements or qualities. Ihave found him to be generous and honest. Well. to re- | 10 sume my broken thread. This old brother Ky. and bach. turned out to be a prospector and miner, and when he found [ had some curiosity ot seeing and investigating some of ; the golden mysteries ot hidden treas- ures, he ye me a very cordial in- | | vitation to go home with him, and he would try and gratify my curiosity, and I accepted. rolled up my blank- ets—you see we follow strictly the | injunction, ‘ts up thy bed and walk,’’ in this country—and away we started, following the line of R. | R., rather a southwesterly course, | i | | through Hackberry. the present terminus of the work on said A. P. road. Here we layed in some grub! (provisions) and away we drove, pretty much the same direction until about five p. m. when we went into camp near the middle of what 1s called Hualipai Valley. which is about 20 miles wide and So tong. Atter hobbleing our horses, and | gatheringsome sage brush and dead | cactus, we enjoyed a frugal meal of coffee, bread, cold beef and plum j jelly, atter which we had quite a/ ittle chat, of the past, present and the futare. We then rolled up in our @ blankets. behind some sage brush and grass, and gave our weary bodies up to slumber sweet and sound, which was only occasionally | disturbed by the roar of a stragling | mountain lion or some cowardly kiotes howls. We was up and on! the alert early next morning, feeling | much refreshed. But we had to! take a dry lunch for breakfast. as the | darned old canteen had leaked all of ; the water. We started out but had } not gone tar before I saw a fine! large ki te coming down the road. not far off, and notwithstanding the excited protestations of my friend | Johnson, who fvowed and declared the team would play thunder, I. was / so excited too, that Lup with a six! shooter (10 inch) and low I layed his wooltship. (The team was man- aged.) Wetraveled on through a part ot the valley and through one eanyon and into another and arrived at his ( Johnson’s) castle about noon, , which is situated between two rug- | ged mountains, but with some small ' messas or table land here and _ there. We drove up to the correll and turned our weary team loose and told them to drink first, which they could | do from a running brook at their) feet, and then rustle the rocky! mountain sides and grow fat. The camp is now small, but is com- posed of much better material th you would expect. Yes, Iwas very nuch surprised, more especially after T heard that there was but one we- maniin the camp, and she of Mexi- can birth.
