Morse and regarded as one of radio's outstanding domestic dramas, has been renewed for an- other year by its sponsor. The re- newal is effective Jan. 1, when the and Aunt |NBC serial nears the end of its fifth year on the air. 3 Morse and his entire “family” now 00—Markets and Police Bulletins are in Hollywood, where the Sun- H Club Program day and Wednesday night broadcasts tional Farm and Home Hour Sant, originate. It was in the spring of 1932 that Carlton E. Morse faced an uninspir- ing typewriter at his desk in the NBC office in San Francisco, He was an ex-newspaperman who had turned to penning mystery serials for radio. And he had about decided that mystery stories, radio, and Morse were coming to a three-way split. Toyed With New Idea He began toying with the idea of something different in radio—a dram- atized cross section of a modern Am- erican family. First he looked over the NBC staff of dramatic players, most of them established troupers who had been on the legitimate stage or in stock. Then he visualized and sketched out his characters, framing them to fit the players he had tenta- tively selected. Thus he created a new type of program planning—cast- ing his show first, then building his/| script to fit his characters. One Man’s Family was put down on paper, and looked so good NBC decided to put it on the air as a sus- taining program. Morse set up his original family—J. Anthony Smythe as Father Barbour, Minetta Ellen as Mother Barbour, Michael Raffetto as Paul, Bernice Berwin as Hazel, Ba! ton Yarborough as Clifford, Kath- leen Wilson as Claudia and Page Gilman es Jack. The first 13 weeks ori lly in-} tended as One Man's y's life span lengthened first into a year, when the program was sponsored on the Pacific Coast. For the last four years it has been heard trans-contin- entally over the NBC-Red network, most of that time for its’ present sponsor, Cast Has Been Enlarged The entire original family has re- mained without a change, except for the natural alterations of time. It’s the sentence: “Around the Tugged rock the ragged rascal ran.” One mistake and the accused gets another chance. But there's no getting away with “Whersh the wagged ruscal?” One motorist who made that in- quiry is in jail now. TO PUT MECHANICAL Arabs May Twirl Gift Dials in Ether War British authorities were under- stood to be ready to flood the Holy Land with short wave sets, which would not be able to get Bari, but could be tuned in on a British station at Daventry, England. It was stated frankly in London the purpose of impending “news” programs, to begin Jan. 3, was to counteract Italian propaganda which allegedly has contributed to current unrest there. At present there are some 25,- 000 radio sets in Palestine. Jerusalem, Dec. 31.—(?)—Pros- pects of a radio propaganda war between the Italians and the Brit- ish delighted Arabs Wednesday, Jeading them to believe they would receive thousands of free radio sets from London and Rome. The Italian government already has distributed free medium- wave sets among Arabs so that they might pick up regular gov- ernment broadcasts of news and propaganda to Palestine and the Near East from a station at Bari in southern Italy. STOKERS IN TRAINS' Installation of New Equipment! on Steam Locomotives to, Be Completed in 1943 Washington, Dec, 31.—(#)—The In- | terstate Commerce commission ord-} ered railroads Thursday to put “me- | chanical stokers on coal-burning | steam locomotives, H The order applies to all locomotives : built after July 1, next, for fast, or; heavy passenger, or freight, service. | It also instructs railroads to install mechanical stokers on “heavy” loco- | motives now in service, this work to/ be completed by July, 1943. The commission's order was on a/ complaint filed in November, 1930, by) the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fire-; men and Enginemen. The railroads, contending the commission lacked au- : thority took the case, to the supreme | court which upheld the commission authority. The complainants contended the operation of large hand-fired locomo- | tives “causes unnecessary peril to life | or limb.” Eat Your New Year’s DINNER Here Hel Nene family, as have various other char- ¢ Grey Sterling Casualty Jacters heard from time to time. ence Carlton Morse now is finishing his =a 24th volume of the program that was othe” Romantic Hour—Quaker|to have run only 13 weeks, He has 6 written 2,200,000 words which have 9:30— FeO" the Diad been heard by more millions of radio Markets, Weather and Aunt listeners than the most painstaking . |Statisticlan or wild-eyed guesser i sBiymng of all Churches—Gen- | youd even venture to say. \—Betty and Bob—General Mills ———— KILLED BY TRUCK —To Be Announced o—Markets and Police Bulletins! watts, Minn, Dec. 31—(P}— 0—National Farm and Home Hour |Martin Joel, 56, of New Ulm, was in- jured fatally Thursday when a pass- Roe- ne truck struck him as he stepped rom his car to clean the windshield.
