Critics who have heard the program previewed in New York have been enthusaistic. about the selection of characters and the delightful results from skillful production. After the legislative ses- sion ends things usually quiet down for a while, perking up again toward the end of the year as politicians be- gin preparing for the conventions early in the even-numbered year fol- lowing. Such preparations now are—and have been for some time—in full blast and the results will become apparent before 1938 is very old, Considered here this week, for ex- ample, were four proposals for initi- Measures which probably will come before the Nonpartisan League state convention in the early spring. Chief among them were: 1, A legal interest rate of 3 per cent, 2, 100 per cent valuation of all property for tax purposes with $5,000 exemption for all property in which the owner resides. Public utilities, including the railroads, would pay on the 100 per cent basis with no ex- emptions, 3. Special taxes on stock in banks owned by chains outside the state. Those are red-hot subjects and no decision was reached by the commit- tee considering them. But that they will come before the League conven- tion seems certain. Incidentally, if they are added to the ballot, it will mean a rather long and involved ballot for the voters to pass upon. Numerous other bits of legislation are in sight for it already. THE DEMON RUM AGAIN For example, there are prospective changes in the liquor laws, One, spon- sored by the beer men, would remove the state regulatory department from ‘ny control over that beverage and make the state treasurer responsible. The arguments for this proposal are many and will be advanced in due time by the sponsors. If they say openly what they are saying privately there will be plenty of blood on the political moon, The other change is sponsored by friends of the regulatory department. and would inject it into the hard liquor picture, giving it certain pow- ers, duties and authorities, As the law now stands, the state treasurer is the connected in “Mary of |official most intimately with administration of the state Uquor law. His wife ran into the store, with her 2-year-old daughter, Bar- bara, in her arms. One of the robbers pointed his revolver at her and the child, Ragan, supe with the fe man, finally seized his gun.
