Many of these farmers haze reported differences of as much as 10 bushels per acre in yields from con- tour drilled fields and fields drilled up and down the slope, says G. N. Geiszler, NDAC extension soil coa- servationist. “One Kansas farmer who plan.ed his wheat on the contour produced eimost 15 and a half bushels per acre, ‘while his neighbor just across the highway, who drilled his crop up and * down the slope, produced nothing. “To see just how much differeace there was in the moisture held on the two farms, the Soil Conservation Service made tests on the depth of moisture penetration, On the con- tour tilled field the soil was moist to a depth of 57 inches as compared 1 inches on the field farmed up ard dcwn hill. That was last December in May, after a 3%-inch rain, mois- ture penetration was again measured. The rain had sent moisture to a depth of 35 inches on the contour drilled field, but on the field farmed up and down the slope, moisture hed penetrated only 15 inches.” One Nebraska farmer planted 42 acres of his wheat on the contour and 10 acres up and down the slope. Ime soil on the two fields was similar, the seeding rates and dates were the same, and the same amount of rain Tell on the two fields. Yet when he harvested his crop he got an average of 25% bushels per acre from the 42- ecre field and only 17 bushels per acre from the field drilled up and down the slope in the customary man- ner, : According to Geiszler, farmers in North Dakota co-operating with the Soil Conservation Service are using rough tillage, strip cropping, contour stripping and crop rotations to pre- vent erosion and conserve moisture. Farmers who are interested in soil conservation are urged by Geiszier to visit the demonstration areas within the state and to see their county agent with regard to payments made by the Agricultural Conservation pro- gram for carrying on: soil conserva- tion practices. among 1,200 youthful farmers a’ The congress is held each year in Huge silver cups—the Moses trophies—were the rewards for national club leadership‘ which Clifford L.
