THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, _ Successful Grain Farmer’s System Calls for Big Farm Arthur Daub Has 900 Acres in| Cultivation—One-Third Al- ways in Summer-Fallow Edtior’s Note:—This is the sec- ond of four stories on the suc- Deer Hunting This Year Best Yet, Says Schendel W. G. Schendel, business manager cessful grain farming operations of Sour Daub, farmer near Fort ark, By KENNETH W. SIMONS Farmers and city folk interested in the operations of Arthur Daub should note well the size of his farm. It has much to @o with his success. The system of grain farming which he has , found successful would hardly prove profitable on small acreages. He has 1,250 acres of land under his control of which 900 are in culti- vation and 350 in unused pasture. The latter. is mostly rough land unfit for | the plow. Of the total he owns only | 490 acres. The rest is rented land. Subsistence crops grown on the place consist of the chickens and two pigs referred to in a previous story . and a farm garden, which has done well in every year except 1936. All other items are purchased. Hag Expert Help ‘The summer fallowing program which is the nub of Daub’s operations was worked out by him in conjunc- tion with federal experts at the U. 8. Great Plains Field Station near Man- dan. Whenever he has a problem he goes down to see Uncle Sam's experts. He finds them co-operative and has Struck up such a friendship that, oc- casionally, one of the government men comes out to see him, often re- maining a day or two. Under Daub’s plan, one-third of his arable land is constantly in summer fallow, two-thirds planted to crop. Thus any given field is idle one year out of three but he has plenty of other land upon which to produce crops. The amount of land farmed enables him to carry an extensive line of farm . If the initial cost of Daub’s equipment had to be charged against a small acreage it wouldn't pay. Has Lot of Machinery Daub has two tractors, plowing with the smaller of the two. He has a com- bine, duckfoot and other cultivators and numerous other items. It all adds up to a sizeable investment, too heavy for a small farm. Yet the man on any size of farm needs these items if ke is ¥o produce efficiently. On this basis, it should be noted that Daub’s system is not applicable to the man on a small acreage. Even a section of land would hardly be enough to support such a layout. In telling his story to The Tribune, Daub made it clear that he is not veoommending his method of farming to anyone. Neither is The Tribune. This is merely a factual review of what he has done and is doing. It is noteworthy, however, that his neighbor, Dan Connolly, farms in “about the same way” and gets the tame results. But he, too, has plenty | + (Next: The Daub home—some cea aed on the Daub farm—and Daub). HIT CONDEMNATION OF WAGE-HOUR BILL Farm Organizations Call Com- mittees’ Action Attempt at Division St. Paul, Nov. 27.—(4)—Eight execu- tves of a national and state farmers’ organizations Saturday issued a state- ment terming condemnation by the Farmers National committee at a recent Chicago meeting of the Black- Connery wage-hour bill pending in congress “without question another attempt to divide the forces of farm- ers and workers.” The statement, released by John Bosch, president of the National Farmers Holiday association, said: “The so-called Farmers National committee by its action condemned the Black-Connery bill. This bill would set up minimum wage stand- ards and outlaw intolerable sweat- shop conditions in industry. “Actual farmers know that the in- come of labor determines labor pur- chasing power. They know also that the purchasing power of labor de- termines the market on farm pro- duce...” Signers of the statement, in addi- tion to Bosch, included Morris Erick- son, secretary of the North’ Dakota Farmers Union and national board member. Schendel and 12 others—including five game wardens—took to the deer trails this fall on the John Modl ranch about 60 miles porth of Bismarcx, jSuests of Mr. and Mrs. Modl, proprie- ltors of the tanch. Thirteen deer— jfive bucks and eight doe—and one Canadian lynx that measured 60 inch- es from tip of nose to tip of tail made jup their bag fgr the three days’ hunt. Game wardens in the party were H. P. Johnson, deputy district game war- | cen, Werner; Clair Hanson, Dunn Center; Ray Henry of the Bad Lands vicinity; G. H. Haynes, Jamestown; and Arthur Rowe, Werner. Other members of the group were from the neighboring vicinity. “Never before had I fully appre- ciated the work the game and fisa department is doing to conserve ouc wild life,” declared Schendel, assert- ing the public “should be educated to the fact that the department is no: cur enemy but is trying to aid us by preserving the future of hunting in the state for our children and our children’s children. “Unlegs we give the department our support, sooner than we realize it our wild game will have disappeared and hunting in North Dakota will be a thing of the past.” Pointing out that there has been a surplus of bucks in the past and that \@ white-tailed buck normally does not mate with more than two or three does, Schendel said members of the hunting party were agreed that the law permitting shooting of does this fall was not a harmful one. “There are approximately 2,000 deer between the Mod! ranch and Mandan, it has been. estimated,” Schendel said. “and it is obvious that if 500 were shct \this year we still would have prospects lof one of the best hunting seasons in maany years in 1939.” Game wardens in the party agreec that deer found dead along the river bottoms this summer died not of dis- ease but of lead poisoning resulting fiom gunshot wounds. Schendel also had a good word for the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs Modl. “Our hats are off to Mr. and Mrs. Modi,” he said, “for they wete model hosts in a model home. Therz isr."t any hardship to tramping the brushlands when you can come back to a home and family like theirs.” Townley Well May Do_ Some Good After All (Special to The Tribune) Robinson, N.
