MAKE BID FOR FAME ON KFYR-NBC CHAIN Is Boyhood Friend of Thomas Thomas, Winner of Last Year’s Vocal Honors HAS WELSH BLOOD IN VEINS Gifford, Soprano and Bass, Also on Program Howard Price, tenor who will make hus bid for the “Met” on the “Metro- politan Opera Auditions of the Air” Program Sunday, Nov. 7, from 4: to 4:30 p. m. (CST), oven an NBC- KFYR network, is a full-fledged butcher. He began his career as butcher-boy at the age of 11 and worked up until at_16 he was taken into the business. His singing career began even earlier, however—at seven he was 90- prano soloist in a Scranton church. The big impetus to his operatic career came when he was 10, He was taken to New York by his baritone uncle to hear Gigli sing Enzo in “La Giocon- ds,” and was 20 thrilled by the aria “Cielo! e mar!” would sing it himself one day. Sin: then he has studied and had a good deal of church pod retor eesgied and this Sunday same aria for the: auditions comeiee jand the radio audience. Price is 8 boyhood friend of Thomas ‘Thomas, winner of last year’s “Met ‘auditions who has become the Bimoee Simon of radio, and in fact sang the same church choir. Both tte credit to Wales for Thomas because he was pee in ‘Wales, and Price because his mother’s side of the family, from which he in- herits his voice, was Welsh. Scran- ton’s Welsh ex-coal-miner won @ con- tract with the Metropolitan Opera last year—will Scranton’s Welsh ex- butcher-boy do as well this year? Newport Soprano to Sing Aniceta Shes, dramatic soprano, is a native of Newport, R. I. Her vocal ability was first recognized in her second year at college, when she was. singing for her own amusement and was overheard by a nun. The next six years were spent at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she won two scholarships. Her New York debut was made last year as a result of her winning the coveted Naumberg prize. Since then she has appeared in recitals in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and other cities, ‘and as soloist with the Boston Sym- phony, Discus-Thrower, Too The great ambition in the life of Gordon W. Gifford, basa-baritone from the Bronx, New York, is to bras the role of Boris Godounoff in Rus- sian, and for that reason he has in- cluded Russian in the languages he 4s now studying. The best discus- thrower and shot-putter his high school had, he found life behind an! office desk too cramped, and last) summer decided to stake everything on his voice. He sings in a church jand on the radio, and already has given two recitals, in New York and in Woodstock, Vt.
