Many types of cooking appliances are referred to as being the most modern . . . but some one of them must be more modern than the rest. Is not the most modern fuel the one that is used by the greatest number of American housewives? We list below a tabulation showing the various types of fuel sed by American housewives. 15,000,000 Families Cook by Gas 7,000,000 Families Cook by Oil 6,900,000 Families Cook by Wood or Coal 1,735,450 Families Cook by Electricity Although they are probably the two busiest men in Washington right now,. Vice President John Garner threw his arm over the shoulders of Senator Alben Barkley, the new Senate majority leader, and neither let political worries interfere with their smiling good spirits as this informal picture was made. The leadership election just over, the two were mapping out plans for control of a rebellious Senate, to restore party harmony and to salvage as much from the President's program as possible. Now place a box of crackers near your bed. For this, a bedside table is desirable. If you haven't a bedside table, a chair will do. Any chair. Next, take a bath. Of course, if it isn’t Saturday night, you will not want to take a real bath. In that case, a sponge-bath is recommended. Use a wash-rag if you haven’t a sponge. If you have a real aversion to sponge- baths, and some people have, think about it anyway. The more you think about it, the more desirable your bed will seem. This helps, If you take try to find a good book. Remember, “an idle mind is the devil’s work- shop.” Be calm, and concentrate on your reading. Morpheus will come to you in his own sweet time—prob- ably in the office next day. TRAVELS AT HOME Carrollton, O., July 31—(7)—John T. Maple, 73, retired rural mail carrier, traveled more than 175,000 miles (seven times around the world) with- out having ventured more than aj dozen miles from home. ISMARCK ARBECUE ARGAIN DAY SPECIALS One Armed Paper Hanger Keeps Busy , a ee eS Logan, W. Va., July 31—(P}— A one-armed paper hanger here is kept busy these days. He is C, B, Beaman, 55, who lost his right arm in a North Carolina cyclone when he was five years old. Z He qualifies as a wood grainer and painter as well as paper hanger. Beaman says he can hang an average of 30 rolls of wall pa- per a day, while the most expert average is 40 rolls. ‘Jumping’ Farm Makes Its Owner Nervous Adamsville, N. Y., July 31—()— George O. Benton is worried about his farm. For some reason, he says, it keeps “jumping.” The “jumps” have. been going on for about a year, Benton says. In the most recent instance the concrete floor of his stable was pushed upward and broken. Benton has set up drilling equip- ment to test whether natural gas is cause of the disturbances. Class of ’17 Finishes 20 Years Behind Time College Station, Tex., July 31—(#)— The class of 1917 at Texas A. & M. college is just getting around to com- mencement exercises. Class members 20 years ago were too busy preparing for war to remain on the campus for graduation formal- ities. A month before commence- ment-time most of them went to offi- cers’ training camp at Leon Springs, where they received their diplomas, They were invited by the class of 1937 to share college exercises, June 3,4 5. Restrictions Against Transients Tightened Washinton, July 31—(7)}—A WPA survey of 12 representative cities shows'| a revival of restrictions against tran- sient workers, along with hoboes, bums and tramps. Troubles stacked against the tran- sient—along with railway police and watchdogs—include difficulty in qual- ifying for WPA jobs, ineligibility. for social security benefits, and employer antagonism toward non-residents. Red Hair No Sign of Unruly Temper Austin, Tex., July 31—(#}—The popular belief that. persons with red hair have a temper is dis- counted by Dr. D. B. Klein, pro- fessor of psychology at the Uni- versity of Texas. “No relation has been worked out yet between a certain char- acteristic and a given bodily trait,” he says. “The average: person may re- member only the outstanding ex- amples when he forms an opinion. ‘The belief that a person with red hair has a bad temper is a popu- lar one. No doubt every person can think of an example among people he has: known. We tend to forget the ones with mild tempers and remember only the hot-headed ones.” WIDE OPEN SPACES Austin, Tex. July 31—()—Brew- ster, county in Texas is larger than the states of Rhode Island, Delaware or Connecticut. The former King ranch alone is larger than Delaware. It is plain to eee that GAS is the most modern fuel .-.-. oth- erwise it would not be used by such a large majority of the housewives. GAS for cooking is particularly desirable in this territory where NATURAL GAS is available at much lower rates than are usual in most any part of the country. MONTANA-DAHOTA UTILITIES CO.
