THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE, MONDAY, JULY 12, 1937 sink sohe Bismarck House of David 5-Run Rally Leaves Independ- ents on Short End of 11-8 Count DUTT GRANTS 12 HITS Leary Leads Local Batsmen With 3 in 4 Tries; Berry Loses to | Gopher Golfer | Fans 10 Five runs in the last inning fell 3 short of closing the gap and the col- | ored House of David baseball team’ defeated Bismarck’s independents Saturday night at the local ball park, | 11 to 8. Darkness halted the contest at the end of the eighth inning. Al Dutt, pitching his first game for the Bismarck club, granted the hard- hitting colored stars 12 safe blows in) ; the 7 innings he was on the mound. ! Four of the hits, including a triple| by Breedlove and a home run by! Ewing, were bunched in the third in- ning, when six of the Van Dykes’ runs crossed the plate. | Nichols Pitches 8th | Nichols relieved Dutt in the final inning, and aided by a fast double play from Elofson to Haley to Myers, retired the side without a hit. Bismarck's runs came in the first, fifth and eighth innings. Merrill walked in the first and was driven in by successive singles by Leary and, ‘Haley. Leary, dependable third-sacker for the independents, hit a triple, the sec- ond of his three hits in four attempts, in the fifth inning to drive in Merrill again, who had walked, Leary then came home himself on a passed ball. Four of the independents’ 9 hits! came in the last inning. Burckhardt walked and advanced on two passed balls as Myers and Nichols fanned. Elofson also walked, and the two were driven in by Merrill's triple. Leary again scored Merrill with his third hit of the evening. Leary advanced on another passed ball, Haley walked and stole second, and both scored on Goetz’s double. Triangle Defeats Elite; Richmond’s Bootery Is Winner First Score 16-15; Shoe Store 3 Teams Fighting For A. A. Lead; Red Birds Climb Take Two From Louisville; Brewers Hand Millers Double Pasting Chicago, July 12.—()—Three teams were virtually tied for the Amer- ican Association leadership Monday, with the scrappy Columbus Red Birds holding a technical edge in the stand- ings. ys The Red Birds marched past Min- neapolis and Toledo Sunday by tak- ing a doubleheader from Louisville. Minneapolis, at the same time, was taking a double drubbing from Mil- waukee, while Toledo could do no better than split with Indianapolis. Columbus took the first game from the Colonels, 9-6, behind the pitching of Max Macon, who chalked up his 14th win of the season even though he was relieved in the ninth. Ed Heusser won the nightcap 14-3 with a nine-hit pitching job. The champion Brewers turned back Minneapolis 7-3 and 12-3. Bill Zuber bested Belve Bean in the opener and in the nightcap Carl Boone, making his first Milwaukee start, held the Kels to eight safeties as the Brewers were belting out 17 off Pettit, Grabow- ski and Baker, Indianapolis defeated Toledo, 12-3, and then dropped the nightcap 11-1 to the Mudhens. St. Paul took two games from Kan- sas City 8-5 and 8-1, the defeats dropping the Blues back into the sec- ond division. A 17-hit attack gave the Saints the opener, and in the six- inning nightcap, Bill Cox held Kansas City to four hits. Carrothers, shown executing a forehand drive, has been victorious in every match played this year. Although the Coronado boy has been performing for only two years, he has won several outstanding tournaments. He is the Southern California junior singles: champion and, coupled with Woodbury of Los Angeles, holds the doubles title. Although he has the makings of just about everything an elbower needs, Cleveland’s lightning-ball youngster can’t seem to find his name on the right side of the scoreboard when all the runs are added up. One whispered suggestion was heard Monday that a spot of seasoning, of the minor league variety, might do something toward solving the prob- lem—that a few months in fast class AA company might teach young Bob- by the tricks of the trade and make him pay dividends. | SUNDAY’S STARS Poof Poffenberger, Tigers—Held Indians to five hits for 3-2 win.
