Legislators at the regular session and a five-day special assembly ap- proved about 260. measures for Gov- ernor William Langer’s signature. One important new measure effec- tive Thursday is an act prohibiting deficiency judgments upon notes, mortgages or contracts given to secure payment of money loaned upon real estate or to secure purchase price of real estate. In case of default, a holder of @ real estate mortgage or land contract is entitled only to a foreclosure or cancellation of mort- gage or contract. Also effective is North Dakota's fair trade act designed to protect trade mark owners, distributors and the public against injurious and uneco- nomic practices in distribution of ar- ticles of standard quality under a distinguished brand. New Branch Bank Law A new banking act will authorize establishment of paying and receiving stations by banks to aid small com- munities as a “public convenience” where no banks are located.
