‘RGHT SOVIET WAR TORDS GOON TRIAL, FOR THEIR LIVES “High Ranking Officers Charged ; With Treason and Con- ; spiracy With Foes \ Mescow, June 11.—(P)—The Soviet ‘Uhion, striking with dramatic sudden- ness, placed eight of its highest rank- ing war lords on trial for their lives Friday, charged with high treason and with a foreign power “un- idly” to the government. Among those summoned before the secret military tribunal was Marshal Michail Nikolaevitch Tukhachevsky. one of the five Red army marshals, who was vice: of war prior ty May 11, and only Wednesday was from his command of the im- portant Volga military garrison. An official communique said all had pleaded guilty. Under the laws gov- erning the trial this meant certain and immediate execution on convic- tion with the right of appeal denied. + It was the Soviet’s third great trea- son trial within less than a year. Six- teen defendants were shot after being tried in July, 1936, and 13 were ex- ecuted after a trial last January. In addition to Tukhachevsky, the were: General Kazimirovitch V. Putna; General A. E. Kork; General I. E. Yakir; General I. P. Uborevitch; Gen- eral Robert P. Eideman; General B. M, Feldman; and General V. M. Prim- akoff. In addition to being leagued with a foreign power, generally believed to be Germany or Japan, the communique declared the accused were guilty of violation of their military oath, trea- son to the fatherland, treason to the people of the U.S.S.R. and treason to the workers, peasants and the Red army CONTINUE from page one Steel Firm Begins Operations Again Defying CIO Union inquiry into “moral conduct of both parties” in the strike.
