ON LONDON STREET} z= Scotland Yard Seeks Answer to Strange .Disappearance of Society Girl. . London, June 9. — (P) — Scotland ‘Yard sought Wednesday to learn Diana Battye’s own story of her | acyer, strange disappearance that ended in a sobbing collapse on a London door- step. The wealthy 21-year-old society girl was found early Wednesday, slumped on a step next door to the home of her Oxford undergraduate fiance, Michael Asquith, She was not able to give an account: service; F. Shey axe seemed on the verge of a nervous col- lapse and was placed under doctors’ ‘care in the home of Michael's mother, Lady Cynthia Asquith. Diana's mother, Mrs. Leonard Hac- ceth, well-known airwoman, said: * “The main thing is my daughter is safe. She is naturally very distressed and the doctors say she is suffering from a severe nervous breakdown.” Young Asquith, grandson of Brit- ain’s famous premier, the late lord ‘of Oxford and Asquith, had disclosed to police that he had received a letter containing a threat to “remove” Diana ‘unless he took better care of her. Apparently the socialite photogra- pher’s model, who had aspired“ to motion picture stardom, had been walking the streets of London while police scoured the British Isles for cher. The mystery was heightened, how- ever, when it was learned she was not wearing the same dress she wore when she was last seen before her ‘disappearance June 1 from the home of her childhood friend, Viscountess ‘Long, where she had been staying for the gay coronation season.
