~ SACRE HAY FIELD Burleigh Farmer Floods Tracts With Water From Missouri River Tuesday Calvin Stout, living 30 miles south of Bismarck, has decided that he can \rrigate 80 acres of hay land. In fact, he already is doing so. Beginning at noon Tuesday, Stout began pumping water with a 12-inch pump, driven by a steam engine, and by noon Tuesday had most of 80 acres covered with water after a 24-hour tun. The water was held in place by a@ dike which he had thrown up around the field. Having satisfied himself that it could be done, Stout Wednesday ap- plied to the state water conservation board for assistance in doing it better, since in some places his land was covered with water to an estimated Gepth of 5 feet and other places were not covered at all. Stout is pumping from a lake formed by @ change in the bed of the Missouri river five of six years ago. When the river rises the lake fills. It contains plenty of water, Stout said, for the irrigation of all the land in the community. The Burleigh county farmer has visions of an alfalfa field which will make him some money, recalls that a number of years ago he let a fine al- falfa field go to sced and threshed more than 9,000 pounds of seed from 12 acres. The seed was sold for 23 cents a pound, a return of nearly $200 an acre from that crop alone. South Dakota Forest Fire Is Under Control ‘Deadwood, 8S.
