GROWN IN CLOSING Bismarck Stages Spectacular Rally to Overcome Deficit in Third Period 3,200 FANS IN UPROAR Baskets by Beall, Bowers Close Gap; Peterson Puts Demons Ahead, 19-18 ; i i Glenn Hanna's Bismarck high school Demons had the North Da- kota Class A basketball champion- ship within their grasp Saturday night but it slipped away in the dy- ing seconds of the hair-raising title game of the 24th annual state tour- nament to return for the second con- secutive year to the trophy case of the Minot Magicians. A gift shot and a field goal by Den- nis Huntley, lightning-fast, auburn- haired forward, pulled the Magicians with a 22-21 victory in the spectacular final contest. It was the second straight year that a sorrel-thatched Minoter has \ proved thenemesis for a scrappy band of Capital City cagers. Last. year it was ‘Ernolf Roland who paced the Magicians to a triumph over the De- mons in the final game, sinking a to- tal of seven field goals from difficult &ngles ‘of the court. ‘Break of the Game’ During that final thriller, Hanna's club amply demonstrated that they had everything asked of a cnampion- ship squad. Courage to rally from a seemingly hopeless position after the game was three quarters gone. Cool- ness once they gained the lead. And sportsmanship to accept defeat when a break of the game robbed them of the coveted title. An unrelenting attack enabled the Demons to forge ahead in the last six minutes of the game when Capt. Bob Peterson flipped in a long toss to bring the count to 19-18 in their favor. Play became more frenzied as the Demons stalled to protect that nar- Tow margin and out of a maze of rapidly revolving players game Gil- forward, who set himself and sent the sphere swishing through the net points with only three minutes of the game remaining. Fans Go Wild Then with only a minute and a half left to play, Huntely re-entered the game, replacing Chetley Ander- 60n at one of the forward posts, and Minot took time out. After play was resumed, Jim Eide one of his two chances at the free throw line. With less than a minute left, Huntley was fouled by Buddy charity toss, shaving the Demons’ lead to one point. Scores With 20 Seconds Left ‘Twenty seconds before the final gun, Huntley took a pass from Eide and let go from halfway between the foul circle and the edge of the court. Mi- purner, G Not 22; Bismarck 21. James, & Millette, Fillate't f Playing with easy confidence, the ‘Magicians moved ahead in the first quarter and piled up a 11-4 tead. Bis- marck recovered in the second pe- riod, however, and whittled the lead own to five points as the half end- ed 15-10. Bismarck still trailed 18-13 at the end of the third but Jack Bowers lopped one through the hoop and Beall followed a minute later to cut the lead to one point. Peterson's long toss changed the whole com- plexion of the game and from then on it was Minot that had to prove its mettle. Outscored From Floor Bismarck outscored Minot from the floor, 10 field goals to nine, but made good only one out of five chances at the free throw line while the Magicians were converting four out of eight charity tosses. Meanwhile, Coach Glenn Hanna was looking into almost as big a hole as the Magician mentor. Five of Hanna's sturdy boys, who carried the fight to the Magicians in two consecu- tive tournaments, also will get their sheep skins this spring. Coach Robertson’s boys who play- ed their last game for Minot high in the championship battle Saturday were Capt.
