+ MOVIUS TELLS CLUB Commentator Must Have Tough ‘Hide’ and Get Food and Sleep on the Run Endeavoring to explode the myth that newspaper political commenta- tors are supernatural because they are able to secure seemingly unob- tainable “facts regarding political maneuvers, Gerald W. Movius of the Fargo Forum Tuesday outlined some of the trials and tribulations of his profession in an address before the Bismarck Kiwanis club. Movius denied that commentators generally resort to listening at key- holes and climbing through transoms to obtain vital information, but he paused long enough to demonstrate one sure way to listen in on & con- versation occurring in the next room. He credits friends in all parties and lobbyists, to whom he referred as “legislative counselors,” as the chief source of political information. The newspaperman declared the political writer endeavors to tell what has happened, why it has happened and what will happen next. The only way he can obtain this information fs through his friends, generally in-. formally, because most politicians cannot be quoted on strategy. Needs Tough ‘Hide’ First requisite for the political re- porter, Movius said, is a “high de- gree of physical resistance,” pointing out that the reporter must eat and sleep when he can find the time. Next he must have the hide of a Thinocerous, since he must not be glarmed: at objections to his writings or vigorous denunciations, ; It ts axiomatic that the commenta- tor: is doing the best job when all political factions are finding fault with him, because it 1s then that he is being most fair, which, after all, is the main objective of the professional commentator. . Despite political beliefs, most legis- lators are utterly sincere, Movius said, nd he declared he is proud to num- ber members of all factions among his friends and deserving of his com- mendation. Movius did explode the myth that. a “by-line” is a tribute to the writer, pointing out that it is the newspaper's way of showing that the writer is to blame for an errors of fact or prog- nostication contained therein. For this reason he emphasised the necessity of checking rumors seven | Dakota and Mra.
