Three cups sifted cake flour, 3% teaspoons baking powder, % tea- spoon salt, 2-3 cup butter or other shorténing, 1% cups sugar, 2 whole eggs and 2 egg yolks, well beaten, 1 cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 3 squares unsweetened chocolate melt- ed, and cooled, 2 tablespoons sugar, % cup hot water, '%, teaspoon baking soda, 2 tablespoons butter. Sift flour once, measure, add bak- ing powder and salt, and sift together. 3 times. Cream butter, add sugar gradually, and cream together until fluffy, Add eggs and beat well. Add flour alternately with milk, e little at a time, beating after each addition. Batter must be smooth. Add vanila. Combine chocolate, sugar, water, soda and butter; cool. Turn a generous 1-3 of bater into greased 9-inch layer pan. Add chocolate mixture to re- maining batter, stirring until thor- oughly blended. Turn this chocolate batter into 2 greased 9-inch layer ans. Bake in moderate oven (375 Geg, F.) until done, about 30 minutes. Spread “3-layer white frosting be- tween layers and all over top and sides of .cake. Three-Layer Frosting Three egg whites, unbeaten, 2 % cups sugar, % cup water, 2 leaspoons light corn syrup, 1% teaspoons van- ila. ‘ Combine egg whites, sugar, water and corn syrup in top of double boiler. Beat with rotary beater until thoroughly mixed. Place over rapidly boiling water and cook 10 minutes, beating all the time with s rotary beater, When frosting will stand in peaks, remove. That will be in about 0 minutes.
