THE PRESCRPTIONS BY ‘Special N. D. Taxes THOUSANDS FILLED ’ ‘Encouraging Improvements Noted by Ladd in N. D. Drug Stores A total of 455,108 prescriptions | were filled by 218 North Dakota drug | Stores during 1936, Culver Ladd, state | food commissioner and chemist, said Tuesday in a summary of drug in-| Spections by the state regulatory ae| partment. In prescription data, Ladd said that | C. E. Mergens, assistant chemist-in- | Spector, found that over a year's} time 218 stores filled 455,108 prescrip- | tions which represented 9.87 per cent | of the average total business of these| stores. “Encouraging improvements over last year,” were reported by Ladd in} the care of prescription balances} and weights, storage of biologicals, ; presence of fewer old, doubtful) pharmaceuticals, fewer stores need-| ang redecoration and increased wear-) ing of special garments.” On the basis of 255 stores inspected | for weights and measures, balances! found inacurate to one-half grain to- taled 61 or 23.9 per cent compared with 42.5 per cent in 1935, Ladd re- ported. There were 24 new prescrip- tion weights noted since the last in- &pection. 1935 in the storage facilities the drug stores in which biologicals are im- properly kept dropping from 20 per cent in 1935 to 12.1 per cent in 1936, Ladd stated. He said that in stores with foun- tain service, 51 did not sterilize foun- tain glasses, 18 sold beverages not vegistered, and of 255 stores, 21 or 82 per cent handled beer. Add Fuel Tax An important special tax on motor vehicle fuel was added in 1919 when a total of $1,061,220 was yielded for special taxes. The-following year in- come taxes made their appearance along with car line gross earnings and fire marshall fees and there also were miscellaneous taxes and per- mits. There were no important additions then until 1925, when the cigaret stamp and snuff licenses came into being and the total special taxes amounted to $2,488,237, With the legalizing of beer in 1934 and the retail sales tax in 1935 the amount of special taxes jumped. Biggest money collectors this year were the sales tax $2,499,883; beer $695,636, cigaret tax $382,839, income $313,040; motor vehicle fuel $2,103,- 771; motor vehicle license $1,527,887 and insurance and tax fees $258,192. The commission pointed out all of the special taxes collected by the State are not spent by the state, Shared Locally The proceeds of these taxes are frequently shared with local govern- ments, it was explained. Special taxes shared by state and local gov- ernments, fiscal year ending June 30, 1936, include: Retail sales, $94,006 to the state 000 to common schools; motor ve- hicle $848,082, state, $846,682 county; gasoline $1,530,000 state, $765.000 county; estate $27,195 state and $50,- 505 county. Other monies collected by the state and distributed to local purposes in- clude special transfers from state funds, fines and penalties, and inter- ments to schools and state institu- tions, and aid is also given by the federal government in support of cer- tain kinds of education, highways and public welfare activities, the re- port showed.
