DAVIES NAMED 10 SUCCEED BULLITT AS RUSSIAN ENVOY Native of Wisconsin, Prominent, Democrat Noted as Inter- national Lawyer Washington, Nov. 20.—(4)—The ap- pointment of Joseph E. Davies, prom- inent Washington international law- yer, as American ambassador to Mos- cow was announced Friday by the White House. Davies will succeed William C Bullitt, who recently was appointed envoy to France. Davies took an active part in the recent presidential electio., campaign as a member of the advisory commite tee of the Democratic national com- mittee. i A native of Wisconsin, Davies served as chairman of the federal trade com- mission from 1913 to 1918 under Pres- ident Wilson and was an ex-officio; member of the war industries board. | After acting as economic advisor to President Wilson at the Versailles peace conference, he was offered suc- cessively the ambassadorship to Rus- | sia, the ambassadorship to Italy and the governorship of the Philippines. He declined all of these posts to run for the United States senate in Wis-! consin in 1918. He was defeatad by a small majority. Combine sugars and milk and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Then boil, without stirring, until the mix- ture reaches the soft ball stage. This means that a drop from the spoon in very cold water, will draw together. It should not form a definite ball, just pull together in the water. Add the butter, let cool’ and beat until it reaches spreading consistancy. LEMON CHIFFON PIE 3 egg yolks slightly beaten % cup sugar 3 thsp. water 3 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. grated lemon rind 1-3 cup sugar % tsp. salt 3 egg whites, stiffly beaten 1 baked pie shell, 9 inch. Combine the egg yolks, sugar and water in top of double boiler. Place over hot water and cook until thick- ened, stirring constantly. Remove from fire and cool, then add lemon juice and rind. Beat the sugar and salt gradually into the beaten egg whites and continue beating until they are stiff again. Fold in the lemon mixture. Turn into pie shell and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until delicately brown. DATE TORTE % cup dry bread crumbs % tsp. baking powder % tsp. salt 1 egg % cup sugar % tsp. vanilla 1 cup dates, sliced % cup chopped nut meats. Mix the crumbs, salt and baking powder. Beat the egg and beat it in the sugar; add the vanilla, dates and Schilling Coffee nuts and stir into the crumb mixture. | Spread ina shallow pan about % inch thick and bake 325 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes. PORK CAKE % Ib. fat, salt pork % cup boiling water 1 cup molasses % tsp. cinnamon % tsp. ginger 1 cup sugar % tsp. cloves % tsp. nutmeg 2 eggs 1 tap. soda % Ib. chopped raisins 4% cups flour Put the pork through the meat grinder, place in a large bowl and pour the boiling water over. Add the mo- lasses, sugar, well beaten eggs, soda and the spices sifted with about one half of the flour. Mix well and add enough more flour to make a fairly thick batter.
