Maestro Spitalny started his baton career in Cleveland and was the first director to offer Tschaikowsky’s “1812 Overture” as a stage presentution. Two and one-half years ago he or- ganized his all-girl band after comb- ing the country for talent and listen- ing to more than 1,500 auditions, The unit, representing the cream of fem- inine instrumentalists, is credited with having developed many new ideas in modern orchestra music and. it ts the first attempt of any: orches- tra leader to assemble a band com- posed entirely of the fair sex that is comparable to the best among the male aggregations. Rew York, Ruth Slencrynski (pronounced slen- chin-ski) has been hailed throughout the musical world as “The Miracle Child.” Since her New York debut three years ago, she has blazed a tri- umphant trail with headlines that nearly approached the rhapsodic in thier superlatives. i Critics everywhere have labeled this 11-year-old gitl pianist a genius and have placed her among the top flight of concert pianist. She was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Sacramento, Cali- fornia. Her father, Josef Slenczyn- ski, a Polish violinist, taught her at the age of three the rudiments of theory and harmony. At four she gave her first concert and later on, at the ripe age of six she made a sensational concert debut in Berlin,— in Paris at seven,—and then her un- forgettable New York debut at the age of eight. For an opening number Rapee will conduct the orchestra Mozart's Overture to “Don Juan.” Immedi- ately following, Ruth Slenczynski will make her first appearance playing the First Movement of Saint-Saens’ Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 in G minor, Op, 22. She will be ac- companied by the orchestra. Two or- chestral numbers will bring the first half of the concert to a close.
