acue DON COSSACK | MALE}! GROUP 1S FEATURED! WITH BiG SYMPHONY Russian Singers Will Be Heard in Hour-Long Concert Be- ginning at 9 P. M. ARE LEAD BY SERG JAROFF “Marriage of Figaro’ by Mozart |s Opening Number Selected by Erna Rapee One of the most remarkable organ- izations in concert hall history will sing as the feature of the second of the new series of concerts from New York's famous Carnegie Hall, Sun- day night, Sept: 20. More than 60 stations of the NBC-KFYR network will transmit the hour-long program at 9 p. m. (CST). The internationally renowned sing- ers known as the Don Cossack Rus- sion Male Chorus comprise the group that will appear with the Symphony orchestra, under the baton of Erno Rapee, in this second concert. Their appearance so early in this series sig- malizes the sponsor’s new policy of presenting occasionally striking mus- ical features of a kind not hitherto attempted in this type of broadcast concert, The singing by the Cossacks will be their first appearance in the United States this season, The group arrived in New York from Europe, Sept. 18. Led by Serg Jaroff, the 36 Cossacks ‘who compose the chorus have reached ® position in the music world where the critics are almost unanimous in declaring the singers to be the for, ost chora] group in ie world. e us ison vty’ “and seldotn able to qe E uncert in any city more than once in each one or two years. Inevitably, the demand for tickets to their recitals is too great for the capacity of the halls. The contributions of the Don Cos- sacks to the program wili be, of course, entirely Russian. On their first appearance on the Carnegie Hall stage they will sing two numbers— the “Credo” by Gretchaninoff, and the Tchesnokoff song entitled “The Little Ditch.” For their second pearance, Conductor Jaroff has al ranged a group of three numbers— the “Song of the Inidan Guest” from the Rimsky-Korsakoff opera, “Sad- ko"; and the two folk: songs, “Dub!- nushka” and one titled simply, “Old Cossack Song.” , To open the concert, Mr. Rapee has programmed for the resin, the overture to Mozart's “The Marriage of Figaro.” After the Don Cossacks sing for the first time, the orchestra will play the prelude to Wagner's immortal “Tristan and Isolde,” and then ,excerpts from “The Damnation Faust,” by Berlioz. When the chorus has completed its second con- tribution to the concert, the orches- tra will conclude the hour with Chabrier’s “Espana” Rhapsody. W.C.T.U.
