| SIDEGLANCES - - By George Clark j occ. ~ “I think he's right, Arthur, 1 remember, 1 never would have paid any attention to you, if it hadn't been for your father’s runabout.” cided MOVIES ‘Swing Time’ Another Big Musical Triumph Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers,/ whose filmusicals have catapulted them to the top of screendom’s fame, definitely score a new triumph in “Swing Time”, their latest vehicle which opened at the Capitol Theatre Saturday. Their dancing in this gayly melodic comedy offering is at their best to the exciting rhythm of Jerome Kern music. The»supporting cast and di- rection are brilliant. The plot of “Swing Time” concerns itself with the interweaving relation- ships between Astaire as a happy-go- lucky, sporting song-and-dance man, Betty Furness as his small-town fi- ancee, Miss Rogers as an instructress in Eric Blore’s dancing academy and Georges Metaxa as a haughty band leader, with Victor Moore and Helen Broderick doing their amusing and misguided best to straighten out mat- ters. The strikingly effective “The Waltz in Swing Time” seems to be the dance hit of the picture and “The Way You Look Tonight” and “A Fine Romance” the two biggest song successes. The highly spectacular “Bojangles of Har- lem” number which Fred Astaire leads with a blackface solo dance, is the prime novelty of the show, against 2 lavish background created by John Harkrider. This time he is in the ranks of the people's army. Sent to Shanghai to purchase arms with which to resist General Yang, war lord, he is lured aboard a train by beautiful blonde Madeleine Carroll, whose father is in Yang's em- ploy. He escapes and gets to Shang- hai where he kills the father who is about to flee to America with the nioney. Cooper and Madeleine are captured and taken on board Yang's junk where they are to be tortured into revealing the hiding place of the money. Real- izing that she loves Cooper, and to atone for her duplicity, Madeleine offers to pay for his freedom with her fe. Yang is mortally wounded in a scuffle. He orders his guards to kill the captives and, realizing he is about to die, commands his men to commit suicide so that they might follow him in death.
