Sermon, “Learn from Jesus.” (Additional Churches on Page 2) AT THE MOVIES | Gary Cooper Plays ’ Soldier of Fortune Gary Cooper, the screen's most famous soldier-of-fortune, will be! seen again in his favorite role when | “The General Died at Dawn,” a Par-| amount picture of adventure, ro-| mance and intrigue in modern war-| torn China, opens Sunday at the| Paramount Theatre. Having already established him- self as filmdom’s outstanding por- trayer of romantic adventure roles | in the French Foreign Legion, the} Bengal Lancers and the Italian and) American armies, Cooper now comes | to the screen as a roving soldier-of- | fortune in modern war-torn China. | Appearing opposite him is a beau-/ tiful blonde Madeline Carroll in the role of the lure put out by a schem- ing war-lord to trap Cooper. This is an entirely new role for Miss Carroll who has already captivated America| despite her few appearances before | the camera. Akim Tamiroff, famed for his portrayals of sinister roles, iz cast in the role of the ruthless war- lord. | ‘The producers of “The General) Died at Dawn” were determined to! recapture the magnitude and signifi- cance of modern China, a popular up- rising against oppression without @ parallel in history. To accomplish this Clifford Odets, brilliant young playwr'ght whose works have caused a sensation for their startling reality and rigid adherence to fact, was as- signed to write the screenplay. Lewis Milestone directed the picture. Astaire and Rogers Open in ‘Swing Time 9 As versatile with his histronic pow- ers as he is with his terpsichorean talent, Fred Astaire enacts the gay ero of “Swing Time,” the new melody film co-starring the irrepressible Gin- ger Rogers at the Capitol Theatre. With six spectacular and solo Specialty sequences keyed to as many tuneful hits by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields, the story of “Swing Time” presents Astaire as a dance- mad lad who is lucky in love and iucky at cards until he meets Ginger. She leads him a breathless chase, charming him with her dazzling beauty and a mutual love for dancing from the moment he stumbles upon her to the final, brilliant scene in the picture. Fred and Ginger are afforded ex- tensive opportunities to display their talents which have charmed a world of movie-goers. In the “Bojangles of Harlem” number, Astaire applies burnt cork to his face and sways the audi- ence in a gay spectacle of breath-tak- ing dancing feats. “The Waltz in Swing Time” introduces Fred and Miss Rogers in their featured singing danc- ing hit of the picture. “Swing Time” will remain at the Capitol Theatre until Wednesday with Victor Moore, Helen Broderick, Eric Blore, Betty Furness and Georges Me- taxa in the featured cast of this RKO Radio Picture. ‘ “We preach and teach a changeless Christ for a changing world.” Fourteenth Sunday after Trinity, 13th m,—-Sunday school with all cluding Junior Bible class.
