D., Sept. 9.—UP)— * A “wild ride” to Fargo aboard a Northern Pacific railroad flatcar on a blistering June day in 1893 with 15 Casselton firefighters stoking the steaming “teapot” for immediate duty upon arrival, was recalled Wednesday by Herman F. Strehlow, Sr., early-day member of the North Dakota Firemen’s association. The Casselton volunteer de- partment was one of five to respond to Fargo’s distress call when the entire city was threa- tened, Strehlow said. Other cities which sent men and equipment to fight the blaze were Grand Forks, Wahpeton, Hillsboro and Moor- head, Minn. The Casselton “teapot,” only steam fire engine in the state at the time, made the record 21-mile trip in 20 minutes aboard the flatcar, Strehlow recalled. Strehlow has long been active in the North Dakota Firemen’s association since he helped organ- ize a department at Casselton in 1890. He was elected president of the state organization in 1897. Today he is an honorary member of the Casselton unit. GA START WORK ON FORT WPA PROJECT Sixty-four WPA laborers went to work Wednesday morning at Fort Lincoln on four projects totaling $18,000. General repair of fort buildings and property, remodeling of a garage, and construction of approaches to the new west airport road leading to the fort are included in the projects. There will be no construction of new build- ings. ‘The work must be completed by Dec. 1, according to Capt..Jeseph Erickson,” quartermaster in charge. By that time, he said, additional projects involving an equal amount of lator, for which japplication has already been made, may have been granted. The four projects which get under way Wednesday are listed as utility appropriation, $6,300; roads, $1,800; Be? $1,800, and buildings, $8,100. | Winning French Pilot Denies Subsidy Charge Los Angeles, Sept. 9.— () — Lieut.
