MOVIES ‘The Green Pastures’ Is Unusual Picture} Something new and different, as refreshing as the clean breath of an Ocean breeze across hot sands, came to the screen of the Capitol Theatre Saturday when the Warner Bros. pro- duction, “The Green Pastures,” had its local premiere. In_ picturizing Marc Connelly’s famous Pulitzer Prize play, which ran five years on the stage and en- thralled millions, Warner Bros. have given the drama a lavishness of pro- duction that far outstrips the stage play. ‘The picture, hailed by some critics as the “modern Divine Comed; “America’s best loved play,” is in- deed a veritable classic in is sim- plicity and sincerity. ‘The remarkable characterizations by the cast makes “The Green Pas- + tures” one of the most human dramas ever presented. The players have| carried out their roles with a sim-| plicity and naturalness that is un- surpassed. Van Dyke was available to direct it. The picture opened at the Para- mount theatre Saturday with Holly- wood’s most romantic team, Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor, heading a remarkably fine cast. Van Dyke, of course, is a veteran not only of the camera but of jungle adventure, and “His Brother's Wife” is a drama of the tropic wilderness. Return- ing from the jungie the fever-haunted explorer finds himself in love with his brother's wife. It would not be justice to reveal the climax but you may be assured that Taylor takes the girl back into the Jungle with him. And there, in a desperate struggle against the mysteri- ous forces of nature, he saves her life bes wins ae love. Barbara Stanwyck ves @ delightful performance. Jean OOP Hersholt, as the veteran adventurer, ALLEY is essentially himself, and another outstanding portrayal of villain is of- fered ‘by the suave Joseph Calleia.
