‘ NYE 10 ESTABLISH BISMARCK OFFICES Says He Will Devote Balance of Summer to ‘Drouth Relief’ Steps Washington, July 16.—(#)—Senator gerald P. Nye, North Dakota Repub- ilican, cleaned up his desk Thursday preparatory to leaving Friday for his home state. He said he would establish an office in Bismarck and possibly another in Dickinson, in the heart of the drouth area, and would devote the balance of the summer to drouth relief. ‘The senator declared he hoped first te find out why the federal govern- ment was “so slow” in getting its relief program under way. Nye said he would establish him- self as a “liaison officer and go-be- tween” for those “who are not getting what they ought to get under the relief His plans called for traveling ex- tensively through the drouth regions and offering his services to the relief agencies as well as to the sufferers. He said also he would do all in his power to assist Gov. Walter Welford in his campaign for re-election. SPORTSMEN URGED TO AID DUCK SAVING Hundreds of Birds Dying on Prairie, Johngon and Maurek Report Minot, N. D., July 46.—(?)—An ap- peal to all sportsmen of the state to aid in rescuing wild ducks, which are dying by the thousands as a result of lack of water, was made Thursday by the North Dakota Wildlife association through its secretary, Attorney L. D. Johnson of Minot. Every sportsmen’s organization, Johnson declared, should “make a concerted effort to visit dried potholes, rescue the ducks and release them in larger bodies of water.” During the last few days OCC work- ers from the Foxholm camp have rescued 2,000 ducks from potholes in the Ryder, Palermo and Douglas vicin- ities, according to Burnie Maurek of Minot, district refuge administrator of the bureau of biological survey. Hundreds of dead birds were found, Maurek said, and some of them which were examined plainly showed the ef- fects of, starvation. “The situation is the most serious we have ever faced,” Maurek sald. “Last spring conditions were almost perfect, with waterholes filled and an unusually heavy migration along the Mississippi flyway. Large broods were hatched and the present mortal- ity is extremely large.” United States naval officers first learned to fly in 1911, Clean-up of Women’s and Children’s Bathing Suits at half price—Buy Now—A. July 16—)— Even a doctor couldn’t keep Polly Moran in bed Thursday as the plump ‘star of film comedy set out to divorce the real estate broker who didn’t like being called “Mr. Polly Moran. The broker's most important en- gagement, however, is 13 days hence. Under his real name of Martin Ma- lone he must appear in justice court July 29 for preliminary hearing on charges he assaulted his actress-mate with a deadly weapon when the dawn came up on Beverly Hills Wednesday. Polly, a veteran of 23 years of movie-making, said she would consult her attorney on the question of mari- tal freedom from the 32-year-old Ma- lone and take the required legal steps after the criminal case is settled. On advice of her physician, the actress refused to sign the assault complaint against: Malone and a dep- N. uty sheriff had to supply the signa- ture. As Polly told the story, with ges- tures for the news photographers, highly dramatic incidents preceded the screams of “don’t kill me!” which aroused the neighborhood about the Martin-Moran mansion and brought a siren-screaming car of officers to the door early Wednesday. She said: “Marty went out Tuesday evening to see a man. About three o'clock he came in, I was just getting into bed. I saw something was the matter so I smiled and said pleasantly, ‘what's eating you, Marty? You look awful.’ “‘T'll show you what's eating me,’ he said, and went over and got the | git out of the puieer, Tm x pats to blow your brains out and mine, too,’ he Says, ‘and do you know why?’ “‘Put down that gun, Marty,’ I said. ‘I don’t know what you're talking about.’ “Somebody just called me Mr. Polly Moran,’ he says. ‘What do you think of that?” Her husband, a former college box- ing champion, flourished a .38 caliber automatic and pointed it at her, said Miss Moran, “and I looked down the barrel and saw a bullet sitting there. “I screamed bloody murder, and kicked the telephone off the hook and mixed up the address of the house with the screams, like I’ve seen done in the movies, “I guess an angel must have had her arms around me, because I heard the click-click-click of the gun but it didn’t go off.” FORKS GIRL TO WED Seattle, July 16—(7}—A marriage license was issued here Wednesday to Mary Geniwill, 30, of Grand Forks, ., and Carl C. James trained their coer queuing fire Thursday on his calm denial of wife murder— a steady, even recitation that was in- terrupted abruptly by the escape of a rattlesnake in the courtroom. ‘The red-haired barber denied he murdered his seventh wife for insur- ance money, Wednesday the trial was thrown into confusion when the snake, an exhibit, squirmed out of its box and slid over the floor. The state has contended James made his bride a victim of the dia- mond-backed rattler’s fangs and then drowned her. ‘Women screamed and climbed on chairs when the rattler appeared. Bailiffs bellowed in vain for order. ‘The snake disappeared under a book- case but soon was corraled and re- turned to its box. Entirely composed, the defendant made a sweeping denial of the state’s charges. He pictured himself as.a devoted husband, in love with his wife, proud and happy she was an expectant mother. Their domestic life, he said, was idyllic. He blamed her death on Charles Hope, the state’s principal witness, who has pleaded guilty to murder in the case. ‘a large French airline has main- tained, without interruption since 1928, an airmail route across the South Atlantic which brings Euro- pean capitals within a week of those of South America.
