The bandits MAIL 1S DELAYED BY USING STATION BOXES Railway Platform Boxes for Travelers Only, Bismarck Postmaster Says Mail boxes on Bismarck railway Platforms are intended for the trav- eling public only, Chris Bertsch, act- ing Bismarck postmaster, said Friday in answering complaints of slow de- livery of mail. Bertsch declared that railway mail service employes are under orders to deliver mail picked up from station boxes to some central distributing point such as Fargo and 8t. Paul for remailing. In a recent instance, a huge bundle of mail from one of the state depart- ments was picked up and taken into St. Paul. In the bundle was mail for many western and northwestern North Dakota points. Bertsch esti- mates that three days loss of time in- convenienced both the department and the recipents. “This mail could bave been deliv- ered to the postoffice in plenty of time to catch the train,” Bertsch de- clared. ‘The postoffice deadfine for catch- ing the various trains, Bertsch said, is 30 minutes before departure. Various rifle clubs in the state were invited by General Baker to notify the state adjutant general's office of their intention to take part in the elimination matches at Fort Lincoln here. Ammunition will be furnished the competitors by the adjutant gen- eral’s office. ‘The winning team, to consist of a team captain, 10 firers and two alter- nates will receive five cents per mile transportation from their homes to the national matches and return. D., May 20—(7)— Three Minnesota concerns Friday were awarded contracts for construc- tion of the new elementary school building in Devils Lake by the board of education following the reopening of bids in Devils Lake Thursday. The general construction contract was awarded to the H. L. Staven com- pany of Hibbing, the plumbing, heat- ing and ventilation contract was awarded to the Healey Plumbing and Heating company of St. Paul, the Johnson Service company of Minne- apolis was awarded the contract for temperature control. GETS LIFE FOR MURDER Chicago, May 29.—()—Thomas Starr, 28-year old Negro rag picker and former circus roustabout, was sentenced Friday to serve 199 years in the Joliet state prison for the mur- der of Mrs, Lillian Guild, 59-year-old gift shop manager who was killed in her Y.
