But the engineering as- Your comments on the specialist racket in Yankeeland warm my heart because it is truer than perhaps you knew. The pediatric racket is the snobbiest of them all. Originally the American Pediatric society was composed of a group of the wealthier practitioners. It is a closed corporation. When the American Acadamy of Pediatrists was formed I joined it, “ as did most run of the mill pediatrists of the country. I thought it might help make me a better doctor. - I know now it was only a method of gathering funds to finance the foundation of “The American Board of Pediatrics”—the brain child of the fertile minds of Veeder, Aldrich and their gang. Having collected one’s $200 for fellowship in the American Academy of Pediatrists, they led one to infer that after all, the : academy had no standing, but, to go places and have a standing in the pediatric world one would be obliged to belong to the Ameri- can Board of Pediatrics. For example none other could teach pediatrics. Applicants must send $20 (not returnable) with applica- tion and be subjected to an examination. Your description — “pampered youths with indulgent mammas” is literal. More power to you. (igned) J. J. Doe, M.D. Late F.A.AP. I said another literal thing in the same article, namely, that pampered young parents with snobbish notions take their babies to these brass pedi- atrists, these born baby specialists who have had no experience to speak of, and pay the quacks about ten times as much as the advice is worth in the open market. Indeed it is a regular racket among Yankee baby specialists ‘0 to contact with such snobbish folk to look after the baby from now on for a fixed price of $5 or $10 a month, whereas real physicians anywhere can and do give at least as good advice and service at the ordinary fees pre- vailing in the community. The snob parents who fall for this racket like to imagine that a folder, slip or circular of more or less stereotyped advice handed to them by a “specialist” is worth more than individual advice given by an “ordinary doctor.” Barnum was right. The baby specialist game as worked in America today proves it.
