THE BISMARCK TRIBUNE. FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 1936 JOPKINS FIRES WPA EMPLOYES; SEEKING ~ CURE FOR JOBLESS Politiac!l Skullduggery’ Mingled _ With Relief in Washing- ton, He Says ‘Washington, April 17.—(#)—A half Jozen more officials of WPA in Wash- ngton state were slated Friday for iismissal by Harry L. Hopkins on charges that “political skullduggery” hingled with relief in the state. Declaring he would not “stand for litical activity” in relief, Hopkins yesterday announced the removal of George H. Gannon, Washington ad- ninistrator., Hopkins said unnamed gersons had collected $3,000 to $4,000 in campaign contributions from the WPA staff and that he held Gannon vesponsible because he was “running she show.” Gannon, described by Hopkins as a Democrat, sid in Seattle: “I don’t know entirely what it is all about.” George E. Starr, Democratic state chairman, said he knew nothing about she alleged solicitation of funds, while Republican State Chairman Jay N. Emerson expressed the belief Gan- Phone 1080 Bill’s Grocery non had nothing to do with such soli- citation. Gannon Had Resigned Gannon, former state senator and banker, recently tendered his resig- nation as state administrator, but it was not due to become effective un- til June 1. Declaring he.did not know just} what the money was collected for in Washington State, Hopkins announc- ed that it had been returned to the contributors. He sent R. C. Jacobsen, San Francisco WPA official, to Seattle to take charge, with instructions to fire “five or six” persons accused of political activity. The Hopkins announcement came about the time that Represeniative Gifford (Rep. Mass.), in a house speech, was declaring that WPA was a “vast and powerful political ma- chine.” Sees Hope in Research Turning Friday to the problem of unemployment, ‘Hopkins issued & statement expressing hope that a WPA research project, now being conducted in Philadelphia, will find the answer to technological unemploy- ment. “I am not impressed,” Hopkins said, | “by arguments that labor-saving ma- chinery is a sort of Frankenstein to which all our unemployment ills may | be attributed. “Tt is undeniable, however, that mechanization has brought about a vast change in our whole social and economic condition in the last quar- ter of a century.” Phone 1080 FREE DELIVERY Rinso, 19c Asparagus, per Ib, ‘ Radishes, © 3 bunches Brown, 3 Ibs. .......- Lettuce, large, 2 heads Tom. The lower courts ordered the tax deed to be issued, and the county auditor appealed.
