Film Mountain Drama ‘Entirely in Technicolor John Fox, Jr.’s beloved story of the Cumberland Mountains, “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” comes to the Paramount theatre Sunday in an all- color motion-picture version starring Sylvia Sidney, Fred MacMurray and Henry Fonda. Produced for Para- mount by Walter Wanger, and di- rected by Henry Hathaway, it was filmed outdoors using natural colors and natural backgrounds almost ex- clusively. “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine” is a story of mountaineers and their feuds. Family battles family, clan battles clan, for years onend—and for causes long since forgotten. Miss Sidney and Fonda are members of the ‘Tolliver clan, united in their love for each other and their undying hatred for the rival Falin clan. Their first contact with civilization and its ways occurs when MacMur- Tay, &® young engineer, arrives to con- struct @ railroad line through their remote hills. At first antagonistic and suspicious, they become his friends when he saves Fonda from death, and, as time goes on, Miss Sid- ney falls in love with him. Fonda, knowing only one code—to fight and kill for what he loves—sets out to “get” MacMurray. But simul- taneously, the rival Falin clan sets out to “get” Fonda. The events that follow when these opposing factions meet bring the film to a stirring cli- max, In addition to the three stars, the cast includes such favorites as Fred Stone, Puzzy Knight, Beulah Bondi, Spanky McFarland and Nigel Bruce. “Be Much in Prayer"— Richard Cordon. Play: “The Easter Gospel Call”— by young people. All are cordially welcome. Mra, R. E. Smith in charge. (Additional Churches on Edit, Pi Laud Harriet Hilliard In ‘Follow | the Fleet’ New personalities as well as new dances have a habit of emerging from Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers co-star- ring pictures, Now comes Harriet Hilliard, night club and radio favorite, as the new Personality “bet” of “Follow the Fleet,” current Astaire-Rogers pro- duction, The blonde and lovely Miss Hilliard attracted the attention of RKO Radio executives in New York, where she was featured soloist with Ozzie Nelson’s orchestra. A screen Phones, and she was straightway dis- Patched to Hollywood. It was the intention to cast her first in a comparatively unimportant role by way of cinematic training. Director Mark Sandrich, however, was looking for a voice appeal beauty to play the role of Miss Rogers’ sister in “Follow the Fleet,” and asked that she be tested for the part. The test convinced him his search was ended. Not only does Miss Hilliard carry @ large share of the heart interest of the film, but she sings two new Irving Berlin numbers, “Get Thee Be- hind Me, Satan,” and “Here Am I, But Where Are You?” Today high odds are being offered around the RKO Radio lot, with no takers, that she will be rated by the public as one of the outstanding “finds” of recent screen history. —— All the area of Egypt that is under cultivation, or is habitable, is along @ narrow groove worn in the desert sand by the Nile river.
